I think LaserDiscs are too big for disc golf.

Think frisbee golf with LD 12", LD 8" and CDV 5"....now that's a game.

I'd be up for that provided the discs are already rotted. :)

You would also play with T2 or Speed, too many of those around.

I read a thing on Mac Rumors that essentially says that 4K iTunes has been cracked as illustrated by Aquaman being all over torrent sites in 4K with evidence in the file saying where it came from.

(Just answering the OP here.)

Ok no body gave any alternatives besides claiming physical media will live forever. I won't be as optimistic as you. I will continue to assume at some point (soon) there won't be any new releases.

Here are some of the alternatives I found.

- RedRay player from Red Cinema. Currently it is dead. They produced and sold one machine named RedRay Player for $1299 in 2014. It has a 1TB built in HDD. Films are downloaded to the drive first before viewing. The codec used is the propriotery Red codec which promises smaller size and high quality. It can output 4K24 on one of its HDMI output. It also has 4 other HDMI outputs which splits the 4K video into 4 - 1080p feeds which allows you to build a 4K wall with 4x 1080p displays. I don't believe Red was able to sign any major studios. This product has been discontinued and Red doesn't allow activation on used ones. Do not buy the ones on eBay because you will never be able to register them.

-Kaleidescape is the only online film service with really high quality downloads. You need to buy their hardware. Strato S is their current model and it's $4500. If you don't care for 4K, their older models can be purchased on the used market for a few hundred $. Films are downloaded on to the player or server in order to view. They are uncompressed and 1:1 copies of Blu-ray and/or UHD discs with lossless audio and extra features. Any film you own is also stored on their cloud. If you run out of space on your player, you can delete some films you don't view often but later download again from the cloud anytime. The store accepts Online download codes found on Blu-ray/ dvd copies. You don't have to re buy those films that already came with digital version included. They have an older model, Cinema One, which had a built in Blu-ray Disc player. All their players have source direct output for pure video quality. If you can move past the price sticker, this is the only option that offers the best video and sound quality along with all the extra content.

- VUDU HDX, Vudu offers HDX and 4K streams which are generally better than iTunes, Amazon and Netflix. Still highly compressed but better one of the bunch. Vudu also offers Dolby Digital Plus/Atmos. It is not lossless but can do 7.1.4. They used to offer disc to digital promotion. For $0.99 you could buy the digital version of your existing DVDs and $2.99 for Blurays. I am not sure if they still do this. Vudu changed hands several times and currently owned by Walmart. it runs the risk of being closed down or change hands again.

- Amazon videos and iTunes. These two are more likely to stay as they are backed by Amazon and Apple. iTunes probably has the best library for newer movies. You need an Apple TV or Mac to view on TV. Apple TV happens to be the best streamer for 4K.

I found and viewed the jacked 4K Aquaman. It’s good enough to be sure there is already a pirate disc of it somewhere but I’m not sure the full HDR experience carried over.

You can duplicate 4K discs with DVDFab. I am sure 1:1 copies are possible.

This was taken from iTunes who has/had an exclusive on 4K streaming. I’m not sure if the resultant file has everything the 4K BD would have.

Was watching something on Netflix and it had to buffer. So how exactly are streaming services the future? I seriously will keep buying physical media or making it as long as I'm alive. Even with the infrastructure of provided the fastest connection possible. How will buffering be prevented especially when everyone is using the service at once?

Presumably the internet will get only faster and faster but eventually we’ll stop asking for higher quality video. Even 4K is pretty questionable as far as how much it’s needed or how much people want it. Eventually being able to send a movie over the net will be a small task. I can already text people 1080p clips with zero issue in 2019.

Solar flares are what will really keep optical discs alive. Cross your fingers for a massive society destroying EMP wave. Depending on when it happens and how intense it is you may end up the only person in your town with a Kurosawa collection.

I'm the only person in town now with an Evangelion bootleg

And I guess I'll just go back to books.

Digital video is just info, the laserdisc is the movie itself in its own construction, thats why LD is the pinnacle of the video formats and will always be.

You just can make for fun in year 2019 or 2900 (era of streaming 5G-8K) your own high bitrate mpeg-1 (yes mpeg-1) video on a CD-R (yes CD-R) and have amazing digital video quality handmade by you

I updated the original post. I am making this a master list of online content provider and media players. It’s incomplete but eventually will be a good resource.

Seriously??

LD is just info too, lots of FM multiplexed loads of it. NTSC(/maybe PAL) and digital audio all multiplexed together in that one FM signal.

Like in its own construction? Oh you mean the actual film? But NTSC/PAL vs celluloid film??? Oh well; I suppose the forum can cope with more than one delusional !#!@$.

yes....but it is not a file! not a file with no physical media interaction, the DVD is read through, the LD "is" the signal you got the point ? agree Celuloid is the best thing ever but it is not a home format

Ertoili sees through the propaganda. LD is the ultimate truth for many reasons.
