Michael Jackson’s Bad, IIRC, had a very sparse sound with a heavily compressed drum samples, very “dance”. Extremely punchy, amazing. These kinds of things are a lot easier to perfect than busier stuff. It’s the same reason why Blue Monday bangs as hard as any 12” at nearly 40 years old. The more tracks you add the muddier everything gets, because each track becomes less important individually. This is why you can barely hear the keyboards in Yes albums...there’s just too much going on.

If you produce your entire album with nothing but a 808 and a 909 that thing will PUNCH. Once you add bass though...then the kick drums need to give some space to the baseline. When you add a guitar it takes away from anything else midrange and also some of the hats. When you add a singer then this continues. By the time you get to a Vampire Weekend records it’s so crammed that nothing can ever stand out. Switch to either Yazoo album and it’s like opening a window of fresh air. You hear all the textures on everything because each is timed to get out of the way of each other. Similarly the Erasure album Chorus or early Mathew Sweat singles Divine Intervention and Girlfriend.

Btw, can someone please remind me how to post online YouTube links? All I ever seem to get in my posts is the URL itself.

Good evening Friends,

Most of the artists below Albums I have purchased on CD, and are the tip of the iceberg of the music choices that I listen to......I stay away from anything that is not healthy for one's soul, for the mind is one that needs to be taken care of in this world.

Some of my ongoing listening gems are as follows;

listening to the CD reissue of Ribbon (Misato Watanabe) from '88. So f***in perfect Japanese pop music. Sooooo f***in good. DVD has some CM s**t, not bad.

Have some '80s tapes of Misato too, sound better than a lot of modern CDs on my rig..

Need the big Misato CD box with everything....

The only Japanese music on laserdisc that I have is a video collection of Seiko Matsuda that I bought for a couple of $ ( I think it was like 50 HK $ ) on a Hong Kong flea market:

https://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/14584/SR ... eo-History

It is a lovely collection and both sound and video are excellent. The artwork is excellent.

I tried finding some of that Misato Watanabe stuff online but both Spotify and Tidal only carry her latest album.

We have a discogs seller here in Berlin called mion records. He is pretty big on discogs. It is run by a guy who is half Japanese and grew up in Japan. Anyway he has a lot
of great stuff from Japan on vinyl for very little money. This album, for instance, for 2,49 Euro on vinyl:

https://www.discogs.com/sell/item/549601362

Usually I could just go there and pick it up but given the current Corona Pandemic that is not an option at the moment. But I would really like to buy a lot of Japanese music from him as he has a lot of it on vinyl from that period ( 80s ) and the prices are very low. I am sure those records sound great, too. I just love the Japanese artwork on both vinyl and laserdisc from the 20th century

Nice, yeah I'd really recommend Misato if you're just getting into '80s Japanese stuff. Hope you can pick up that LP after all this, I'm sure it's a well done release although I am not into vinyl at all. Every Misato recording I've heard (CD and tape) is perfectly mastered with a lot of kick.

Matsuda is someone I never really got into. It's shallow but I don't like her looks. The character designer from Macross, Mikimoto, was a huge fan and based Minmei off her so I should be a fan but I'm just not. I AM a big fan of the VA for Minmei though, Mari Iijima, really went on to become a very competent pop singer songwriter, has lived in LA for 30 years and still records.

That was very interesting to read, forper. Thank you. I have also read on several forums that Japanese vinyl often sounds quite thin and that it is not that great. I only have two Japanese
records and those sound really good to me so I don't know. What I have noticed is that CDs became a mass product in Japan much earlier than anywhere else in the world. There are already
quite a lot of albums from 1987-1988 that were published on CD/tape but not vinyl. South Korea was different in that regard with very late vinyl releases from 1992/93.
I just believe vinyl is the best out of all music formts I have tried in my life, even SACD. I just got four Herbie Hancock 12 inch maxi singles for very little money and they sound absolutely divine.

This one for instance: https://www.discogs.com/Herbie-Hancock- ... ase/202720

It sounds absolutely fantastic and even considerably better than the same tracks on the CD and normal vinyl album release. And I only paid 2 Euro for it. And I know when I die I can inherit my records to my daughter and I know they will still play whereas with a CD I am not so sure.

Really like the lead singer of this prog metal band. Originally heard him in another band and then found this band. Can't help but keep listening to this album.

I scrubbed through this and I liked what I heard. I’ll look up some ad-free way of hearing it later.
