Looks like the death knell for cinema as a big player decides to temporarily close (and probably won't reopen) all of it's UK and USA theatres. There is one Cineworld in Ireland too, which is closed and probably won't reopen.

https://www.theguardian.com/business/20 ... bs-at-risk

I imagine the future of cinema will be one big player and the rest will survive as boutique operations. Drive In's have done really well globally this year. I'd love to try a Drive In to see a triple feature. 70's/80's horror, B movies, Italian crime etc would be brilliant.

Really depressing news. The Odeons will stay open at least. And my local one is a luxe. Best cinema experience ever. Recline with your feet up, eating your popcorn and nachos whilst enjoying the film. Heaven.

They are doing shutdowns here too of theaters.
Can't really understand why they are continuing to finish the build of a new theater here in my little town.

Greedy studios won’t have a place to release their flicks when they eventually want to.

All they want to make now is $300M superhero crossover crap. Most of the revenue that these movies make comes from China. I don’t even see the need for chain theaters in the US anymore. The indies that run off donations will continue to run off donations and I’ll continue to go there...once it’s possible.

Just an acceleration of the inevitable.

Can't speak for a global audience but here in Perth more or less $20 for 20c worth of popcorn and a couple of Maltesers, then next to no change out of $20 for the ticket to see the movie at lower PQ and especially SQ to what I get at home....... LOL and don't even get me started on the premium they like to charge here for so called "gold class" with the nice reclining chairs.......

This is a business model destined to die.

I've avoided actually going to the cinema for years. I get there are exceptions with some great quality cinemas around the world but honestly the options here are a joke that deserve what's coming. For many years I wished I could (even) pay for a quality download to watch it at home, at release, as per going to an actually decent cinema.

The place close to me is actually rather amazing. It’s all recliners, the sound and picture are usually great.

But how many times a year can I be drawn in to pay $$$ to watch a classic I already own? Once, probably. How many times will I see the new Transformers or Wolverine movie? Never. Not in many years anyway.

Zeta, we all know they'll draw you in to pay 40 a seat to watch American Pie in 3D.

Every time Fathom shows it I get a Google Alert.

But seriously, Totoro, Transformers: The Movie, Grail, Lebowski, it’s fun to do that stuff. You know, movies of a type they never show anymore. Intelligent comedies, usually. Sometimes anime, intelligence optional.

Thank all that technology and gear prices have dropped so much we can sort of simulate a nice home theater without all the crazyness.
On another note, the drive in is making a comeback, now I need to get an old parking lot and figure how to throw some LD, DVD or Bluray
for profit without going to jail.......

I do want to check out the drive in scene. That may be the only legit use for a Bluetooth soundbar. Just velcro that 7.2 tube to my dash, run it off the 100V outlet...if it even needs it, the cigar light may do.

Kind of depressing news, but Regal isn't my theater of choice when I want to go to a movie.

I prefer AMC with their Dolby Cinema showings.

However, AMC appears to be on the brink as well...

https://variety.com/2020/film/box-offic ... 234575780/

If both Regal and AMC go under, I don't know what I will be doing if I want to go see a movie.

There aren't many other smaller independent movie theaters in my neck of the woods.

Even after the pandemic, things still aren't so rosy for Regal/Cineworld . . .

There are maybe one or two movies that come out annually that I would consider visiting. Marvel is dead to me and many other movies are also drenched with woke politics, I am not paying for that.

I feel like over consolidation of theaters lead to hyperinflation of the prices of everything the theaters have to offer. Use to be you could hit up a small theater that maybe had as few as two screens, and they had relatively low maintenance costs, could operate with as few as two employees, and the prices for tickets and snacks were reasonable enough.

Regal Cinemas are the prime example of overkill! Regal owns two of the four remaining theaters in the county I live in. Regal literally bought out all of the other theaters in this county, save two that refused to sell, and demolished them. The two Regal built new are a 20 screen megaplex, and a 16 screen theater, both with stadium seating. The maintenance and upkeep on those buildings has got to be unfathomable. The 20 screen theater suffers from a lack of parking spaces, as it's located in a shopping center complex that has around thirty additional businesses; including CostCo, Cabela's, and a McDonalds.

Their 16 screen theater has the abysmal reputation of being in a rather nice shopping center that was built new hardly ten years ago, but the developer was out of their minds as they built in one of the highest crime areas of the city. Four of the anchor stores originally in that shopping center complex have either closed down those locations permanently or relocated them to other areas. And at least half of the smaller shop suites that flank both the left and right of the entrance of this theater have been vacant since the shopping center was built as it's just not a good side of town to attempt to run a business in, unless you're a thrift store or a pawn shop.
