Not really a fan of The Guardian (or most newspapers in general) but here's a link anyway to an article published today about how the Spanish version of Dracula was made way back in 1931.

I've read about this previously in the Universal Monsters Blu Ray box set (which is great by the way). This article expands on the Blu Ray booklet a little bit more (but only just, a lot of it allegedly looks lifted straight from it albeit not word for word) and is a decent enough read with your Corn Flakes.

Yeah, this movie is something else. When I got the big DVD set I didn’t understand why this movie was included...then I watched it. There is some bonus or commentary as well, I think, on that DVD that sets it up pretty well.

Yep the Blu Ray is the same, very much stuffed to bursting with extras, commentaries, the original and spanish versions of Dracula and on and on and on. The accompanying booklet in the 8 disc set is great as you can read all about each film as you get each one ticked off in the set. Some great trivia in it too as well as actor/actress profiles and so on. A lot of what was in the article I'd already got from the booklet, though there is some good new information there so well worth a read.

I watched the original Dracula recently and it did nothing for me. I don't understand why it is so lauded. Perhaps the Spanish version will be better when I get round to watching it soon. Which did you prefer, the original or Spanish version?

I had read about the Spanish version of Dracula for many years (since I have read many a tome on horror films over the years) and how it was in some ways superior to the Browning/Lugosi version.

Didn't know about how the film was lost for many years until the prints in NJ and Cuba were discovered.

I shall have to check this one out finally.

I guess I still prefer Bela, but these movies are very ingrained in my brain, not sure if preference even exists anymore. I got the DVD set for Xmas once so I just waited until October and watched all thirty one movies, Dracula (1931) through The Creature Walks Among Us (1956) in chronological order. I never would have asked for this set but I love it. It’s black and white scary movies all October forever now. The better movies clearly are earlier in the run...to say the least, but the dumb 50s stuff has its place too. Also, Abbot and Costello... this is clearly their best work.

The box set I have is made of individual releases. The Wolfman set, the Mummy set, etc. The outbox does us the favor of listing all the movies in order, which will have you going back and forth through the discs to find the next movie. House of Frankenstein is on here two or three times, IIRC.

The Guardian are at it again. I think someone who works there must be watching the Universal Monsters box set too!

This time they've ranked the best Frankenstein (still hate that title, he's The Monster. Frankenstein was his scientist creator) films. Sorry but the Number 1 choice I cannot agree with.

I forgot about the Gene Wilder film, might give that a try. The Hammer version too sounds brilliant. I'll definitely have a shot of that.

What a strange article.

Young Frankenstein is extremely good, as good as Blazing Saddles or Willy Wonka or anything, really. One of my favorite movies ever.

The fancy US LD has some great bonus footage of Marty Feldman on Mexican TV, IIRC.
