At long last, after 10 years of waiting, the bronze statue of Detroit's favourite son is complete!

Yes, I backed the Kickstarter. Yes, it was worth it.

Now it's just a matter of time that the BLM rioters will pull it down.

Robocop is an 80s crime panic movie that, if anything, demonizes the city by depicting it as a completely amoral crime ridden hell hole eternally beyond redemption. Hollywood d bags who have never been there (and therussian) have no idea what they are talking about.

They should give the statue to Dallas Tx, a much much worse city and the one where Robocop was actually shot.

Ted Nugent is on record as saying that Michigan doesn’t qualify as “America” anymore so it doubt he’d be invited to such an event. Again, better off in Dallas...where people will defend it as history when someone wants to take it down.

I’d like to see how much of the money needed to commission the statue actually came from Detroit and its suburbs and how much of this initiative is just outsiders being ironically “hilarious”.

Well . . . Philadelphia has a statue of Rocky.

Why not Robocop for Detroit?

Have you seen both Rocky and Robocop?

Let me know when Philadelphia has a 12 Monkey’s theme park bought with foreign money because that’s basically what we’re talking about. Rocky isn’t the most straightforward sports movie but it is broadly inspirational and the city is physically part of that thanks to the steps. Robocop depicts Detroit as pure hell for everyone living there.

Can we get a statue of the girl from The Exorcist vomiting or with her head turned around in DC?

If anything, Robocop is probably sugar coating things in Detroit based on the houses for $100, sprawling ruins, Zug Island (look this place up, it's an industrialized island hellscape black as Mordor that poisons the entire surrounding neighborhood), crime, and Hardcore Pawn.

I don’t think it’s possible for DC to be any more anti-inspirational so, sure. But only as a tableau with Mars Attacks and Idiocracy pieces as well.

If you're only looking at the depiction of Detroit in the movie, of course.

But Robocop was someone who was trying to help and fight against both crime and corrupt officials in that "pure hell" against all odds.

So it all depends on if you want to look at the hero of the film or what he was fighting against.

I live a half hour from Detroit. I’ve been there 1000 times. Never been shot, never fell into a pool of toxic waste. You’re falling for the very thing I’m complaining about, played out stereotypes older than you are about a place you known nothing about. You could just as easy show Belle Isle, the Woodward Dream Cruise, Third Man Records, the Detroit Institute of the Arts. Did you known Detroit has a canal system that you can rent a boat and use to tour the old city? There are $100 homes (because taxes will be $2000 a year) but there are also $3M homes, you didn’t mention that. There is an Indy race there in the summer that is a lot of fun. But you posted a picture the worst thing you could. Try that with Berlin, London, Shanghai, etc and see what most horrible thing is you can dig up. You won’t though because they aren’t Detroit.

“Any jokes about how New Jersey smells? Never mind that it’s on the ocean and has literally two million acres of forest because once I was there, technically, while driving between my hotel and the airport and that’s all I know so I just want to hear about the smells.”

Guys we are talking about movies.
Fictional stories that parallel reality in part due to geography and names of urban centers.
I mean Manhattan was depicted in Escape from New York before robocop was created. So there was precident in cinema going back to silent films depicting urban centers in a unflattering light.

I grew up in Detroit suburbs and then in my early 20's lived within a mile of the D.I.A. Detroit Institute of Arts circa 1990. My clan paralleled the Cass corridor.
I lived amongst the post Victorian era of 1880's abandoned mansions and the still standing remnants of the late 1960's riots.
My home was one of two white houses on our block.
I cherish my experiences more then I can type. Ultra wheels were invented around that time and I roller bladed ALL OVER DETROIT. (I even went from the DIA to Royal Oak up Woodward a few times. Kinda sketchy however I survived.
In my opinion (back then) 95% were decent hardworking citizens. 5 % preyed on others and gang banged.
Again, this was my experience, may not follow statistics, purely my subjective experience.

So Detroit was nothing like the depicted dystopia........
Yes there is crime, yes there always will be political corruption.

Let's keep movie fiction and reality in proper perspective.

Cheers to the membership

I liked RoboCop 3. I guess I am in the minority there. You could almost see the moment Orion went bankrupt in that film. The jetpack is still genius!

The Arrow Blu has a great interview with Nancy Allen on it with regards the odd mention of the third film.

Never seen the TV series and will have to track it down. I hope the reboot gets a sequel too, it was alright.

I appreciate this labor of love. But then, I would have no objection to plopping a statue of Snake Plissken down in NYC either (not far from my birthplace) ;)

I want to live in that fully wired '80s house in Texas

Think it sold a few years back for about 20% of what a normal house in Ozstralia would sell for.

Robo can be a statue in my town anytime. I'm sure 99% of you guys know but Tokyo has/had a 1:1 scale RX-78 defender and it was glorious, took this snap back in '09 in Odaiba:

I had the honour of seeing the Gundam statue in Odaiba in 2012. It's bizarre in that it's outside the doors to a food court in a shopping centre. So odd yet so cool!

Did the Gundam cafe in Akihabara too but it was really expensive and the food was a bit crap. Dunno if they had it in 2009, but in Odaiba there was a little trailer set up which had all the merch for sale. Picked up a photo book and a bear brick. A lot of tat was fairly expensive.

Well worth a visit though. Didn't it get dismantled though?
