| Post subject: | Can 3D headsets handle DTS, AC3, DTS-HD-MA etc? |
I'm thinking of getting a head mounted display specifically for watching 3D films, and some 2D stuff on occasion. Note it would be for occasional viewing, not playing games or extra long viewing periods. I just want to watch some 3D Blu Ray's or Laserdiscs and that's pretty much it. Does anyone know if the current crop of headsets e.g. Facebook Quest 2 etc can handle DTS audio and all the rest of the fun stuff? If I went with a Zuckerberg Facequest 2 retina data slurper, I know it won't play discs from a player, but dumped 1:1 to my NAS it might over DLNA? Does Skybox VR or Bigscreen properly play back DTS etc? I was thinking of going for a Sony HMZ but heard they are so fiddly to use and create huge dents in your skull due to weighing more than a bag of anvils. I think also it's only the last revision of the HMZ that can do all the fancy cinema and DTS-HD audio stuff properly? A projector and all the rest of it isn't an option so this is probably the next best thing for a while for me. Any advice is much appreciated. |

They had the following to say: if I play back my film files in MKV format from my NAS, does Skybox and the Quest 2 play them back properly Yes we support 3D movie playback in MKV files. One of our key feature is to provide all format supports and smooth streaming from your local devices. can they handle DTS audio? DTS HD MA, Dolby 7.1 etc? Yes we support DTS, DTS HD MA and Dolby TrueHD 7.1. I guess then if I got a Faceache PII Slurper 2 then I could dump my 3D discs 1:1 and play back from the NAS. The only thing then is does Skybox VR and/or the Facebutt PII Slurpfiest 2 handle 24p video correctly? If not, then the big win there goes to Sony as it has a dedicated 24P mode. |

Zeta's referring to this one poster who kept asking over and over and over and over about if his headset/headphones would decode Dolby Digital from Laserdisc. Even when he was given an answer he'd still argue on about it. That being said, I've never used a 3D headset other than the attachment I got for my Galaxy phone since it was on clearance. Does the headset say it supports any digital surround formats? Normally devices that do will have the Dolby Digital and DTS logos on the box and even on the device itself (like how receivers have the logos on them.) |

Ah that makes it clearer thanks! The Sony HMZ definitely does. Though it's 720p OLED and made in 2013. The bonus would be being able to hook it up to my DVDO and watch Laserdiscs as well as 3D Blu Rays. I keep reading so many issues with the HMZ in terms of fit and 'sweet spots'. I also already own a PSVR though it does suffer terribly from low resolution, screen door effect etc hence my looking for an alternative. It's a shame the PSVR doesn't work standalone as I'd just plug it and the processor in to my DVDO and be done with it. I haven't had my PS4 Pro set up in a very long time. The Facetrash Quest 2 seems like a great option but lacks a video input (e.g. HDMI). Skybox VR confirms they support all the fun audio codecs. I've just read there on user forums that 24p does seem to work. This is in contrast to the HMZ T3 which has a dedicated 24P mode. Apparently you can trial a Quest 2 for 30 days. Maybe I'll talk myself in to that. Buy one and try it out. If it does everything I need apart from the HDMI input part then it's probably worth keeping for the modern 2020/1 technology? |

Oh you mean a Turtle Beach headset or similar? That's a bit odd. |

Sorted now. Got the Sony HMZ-T3W and enjoying testing it so far. |
