your right but he is supposed to have such a high standard on his discs. When i was working & didnt have time to check my purchases right away he sold me The Hustler which had laser rot on side 1 by the time i found out it was to late. In other words he shouldve checked the disc before selling. I made several offers of say $14.00 on a $19.95 disc he thought they were too low so he bared me from making anymore offers or buying from him. He can keep his gold plated discs & yes it was his fault for not checking a disc with laser rot before selling since he thinks he is so perfect.

mikeystoyz wrote: In his defense, and I am not defending him. I have had 3 discs in the last week come back reported as rotted. I checked them when i watched them three years ago and they were fine. So that being said, it is possible they went bad during that time. He sells a lot and it is not possible to check each and every one. I go by what is said by this website and if everything checks out and the disc has no issue with rot and I have seen the disc recently - 3 years - I send it out. Now, these discs had gone bad in the last three years, which sucks. Now I am going to have to start watching again and make sure the stuff is ok. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but that 3 is now a 4. I received the second parcel of LDs I bought from you today which includes 2 discs - The Blob and Humanoids from the deep. Humanoids had a hint of speckling at the very start of side A which I noted but wasn't too bothered about. Side B was a different story altogether - absolutely filled with speckles and even the audio was affected. It was particularly bad at the start. I have to be honest when I buy a used disc from anyone selling it on this site I expect it to play perfectly unless there is some comment to indicate otherwise.

That is horrible, I know I watched those recently, within the last year. Humanoids especially, I saw the movie less then a year ago seriously. That sucks. I get to go back and check them over now. Got a lot to check. Is it possible my player isnt catching them? I will check and see if I have another copy of the blob. Sigh, this stinks. Refunded. I have implimented something new for myself, other then I will immediately refund any money for a bad disc - I guarentee that I have watched a disc at some time in the past 3 years because I have for 90 percent of my discs. I even go to the point of ripping them to dvd. So, I get to go and find the dvds, check them against what have been told to me and see if I can see anything. I am also starting to watch my discs again, assault on precinct 13 is good as are my copies of Animal house and the Addams Family, lol. I do apologize once again and you have been refunded for the discs. I have sold probably 2k discs in the past few years and this week besides you I have had another person tell me a disc was rotten and once again, I had watched the discs within the past 2 years. So this could be mean bad things. I havent had issues with anything pressed after 1997 yet thank goodness. The latest besides the two you got was a pressing of Dirty Harry.
I do hope that discs that were ok two or three years ago arent dying on us because that would suck.

mikeystoyz wrote: Well, I can personally guarentee nothing that leaves my house will be rotted from here on out, I thought every 3 years was enough but it appears as if that is not true anymore. I am going to check everything as it leaves. I had to check 10 discs today, thank god for chapter search. As to the moneys, just resend what ever you paid for the blob and like 5 bucks on shipping. Mikey - thanks for the instant refund and I've returned due funds for the other disc which was fine. Just a pity about the Humanoids from the deep as that looked a very cool movie to sit and watch.....it was just getting to the fun stuff on side B when the rot started. As for your 3 year rot plan you are getting me very worried. I hope you are wrong about LDs suddenly starting to rot. With a tonne of LDs in my own collection it would take me years to be able to even watch them all to find out. I only sell a handful of discs per year in comparison. I check everything is as I have originally described just in case as I hate surprises and I would hate to give someone else a bad surprise. I've received some amazing parcels in the last month so maybe this is just a bad week for me. Still I did get a Marky Mark LD today that was absolutely beautiful condition so thanks to that seller who was from LDDB.com ......not all bad eggs here!!

rein-o wrote: some older discs like the discovisions i think should still be kept for light rot but not too bad, or if one side is good, or the cover is good or better than another etc. I'd agree some older discs which nearly always have some speckles should be kept or very rare rotted discs as they may still have some value to a collector. There is however an awful lot of dross out there - I've a mountain of rotted LDs sold to me over the last 6 years. In some cases the seller made it clear they had no LD player to verify discs so I took a chance on them when buying certain discs. Others were sealed stock which I opened to find the discs were totally rotted. The vast majority though were discs that were supposedly fine to play. As I've mentioned almost every major seller out there has sold me defective stock at one stage or another which only goes to show the scale of the problem. Laser rot is the single biggest problem with laserdiscs that no collector ever wants to experience. If severe, it devalues items to be virtually worthless. Some sellers on Ebay often sell very cheap batches of defective titles to get rid of them, stipulating in the listing that there was some problem or other and they were put in a reject pile either due to the condition of the disc or sleeve etc. I will have to do that at some stage or simply take a trailer load to the dump.
