Got a Sanyo single sided LD Player here..otherwise in perfect (as new) condition except for the Laser Assembly Linear Gear Rack.

Cracked in 3 places the Gear has altered pitch and tooth damage because of it.

My limited understanding is that Gear Racks are identified by Mod/Module/Modulus Type...which I understand relates to the Pitch of the Gear teeth.

From best I can gather the pitch of the existing gear is approx 1.6 or 1.8mm ...which would equate to a 0.5 or 0.6 mod/modulus/module

0.5 mod/modulus/module type gear racks are quite common but 0.6 not so much

Anyone else had this issue and have you repaired with a replacement gear rack ?

Cheers

Looks like someone needs 30 or 60 min epoxy. The longer the time the stronger it is.

Hope you didn't pay a lot for it.

The plastic rack is glued to a metal guide (probably by epoxy!) so to close the crack gap would literally mean risking destroying whats left of the rack to get it off the metal guide...its odd that its kinda shrunk and cracked!...not seen that before. As a side note I am noticing more plastic part deterioration on other players...I think this is a major challenge as we try to keep them usable.

This was a very very cheap player..all my players have been around the 30$ US mark - most are now working...though there are more to try and fix if i get time.

I might buy a cheap 0.5/0.6 modulus plastic gear to see if that matches / runs in the existing rack...and then that will give me the knowledge to see if a cheap as possible replacement rack is obtainable or not....if not then there is no harm in trying to release the old rack off the metal guide as its unusable as is...to see if I can close the gap back up.

Fixed the rack.....
The Plastic rack is moulded into the supporting metal bracket...I used a soldering Iron and cut the connections allowing the broken pieces to again line up, I then plastic welded the fractures and topped off with some epoxy where needed...it worked - no more jamming.

..however the Laser is gone it seems...this is the same Laser head as I replaced in the Sanyo LV-K77 All in one Karaoke Laser machine last year.
Same set of symptoms - sees the LD but cant play...and the lens looks kinda cloudy...
Seems these Sanyo Laser heads are deteriorating with age rather than use - same as some of the Sonys?!
Going to see if I can order a replacement laser.. another from the same place as last time.

Sounds like a bad material then :( Of course basically *nobody* intended these players to last this long.

(and lens problems would explain why Sonys tended to degrade over time, never had one so I haven't ever looked at the RF)

Yeah agree - it is amazing really isnt it.. just how long most players have and are lasting

I think the idea here of moulding the plastic around and into the metal bracket with their different thermal characteristics might not have been the best idea for longevity - this bracket and track quite complex compared to what Ive seen thus far. To replace this existing..would need to create a new bracket that an available correct Mod Rack would be able to be mounted...hopefully wont be needing to do that now.

Have purchased probably the last NOS SFL-90 Laser for a replacement - good price at 6USD. ...currently shipping times to Australia are terrible...just have to be patient.

Thanks. Was curious if it had any similarities to KHS-130A, which it does not.
