Post subject:  Laserdisc Closed Caption Help Needed
What do i need to do to get subs from my laserdiscs?

I have:

Pioneer kuro plasma tv with teletext (netherlands) (does not work on scart or compo)
Pioneer cld-59 elite,cld-925,cld-s315

Not of these player in combo with my plasma or normal crt tv will give me subs

Any idea?

Well, let's start with the basics.

Are you trying to play a Laserdisc that has closed caption encoding? You'd know as it would have this logo somewhere on the jacket:

If you are, does your plasma or CRT have closed caption capabilities? If so, you'll have to find out what you'd have to do to turn them on while playing your closed caption encoded Laserdisc. I believe most LDs are coded on "CC1" so choose that in your display's closed caption options.

also your TV has to have the CC.
my TV has CC but my projector dosen't have anything.
so my LDs have nothing on the screen unless it's burned on the image or it's an LDG which will come from the player only.

In order to view CC on a projector or other display, I have been known to use an external decoder ; but this is often unnecessary. The same chips are used to decode CC & TeleText from analog video, so most European TVs will have an option which will decode it.

I've not come across one (european) TV set that could decode CC.

I have a Pioneer Kuro myself, and it cant do CC.
Maybe the models on the u.s. market can.

None of the CRT's I had could do CC either.
CC seems to be not very popular in europe.
Subtitles for tv shows are usually available on a teletext page.
Subtitles on DVD can be activated manually (if available).
And I don't exactly recall any CC on PAL VHS.
How many PAL LD's used CC?
And did that vary a lot by country of release?

So basically what you need is an external CC decoder box.

Thanx for the reply s. I think legally every LD had to come with CC for the hearing impaired but i could be wrong.

So now i have to find à closed captioning device... Since my girlfriend does not understand it that much whitout some kind of subs..... Yes i know :)

Anybody got an idea where to get one?

LD does not normally have CC. Now if you have a disc made with CD+G capabilities then you need a player with LD+G capabilities plus the external decoder. The CC could have been on that. You need to have a TV that can decode the Audio input and generate CC and overlay onto the picture or an external box I believe was made to do this. You would need to talk to others about the external box. LD was developed in the 60's and there was no CC requirement in the 60's.

well,every laserdisc i have almost states the following:

closed captioned by the national captioning institute used with permision (see pic)

check your discs.

wiki also states it,so for the record every laserdisc has SUBS in it, just need a decoder

Many laserdisc’s contain the ability to display closed caption subtitles. The difference between Closed Caption (CC) subtitles and the ones you have seen on DVD is that CC subs are processed in the TV and not the player. The Data is held in a sub-carrier on the video. Not all peoples set-ups can display them though, most set-ups need a CC decoder box but some TV’s have this feature built in. Its a very useful feature for Japanese anime"

Are you saying you can't find a CC decoder for sale or that the picture is of your decoder, but you can't find any info online about it?

An eBay.nl search for "TV Guardian" gives me two international sellers (I'd recommend the 201 over the 101, because the 201 has S-video support)

I dont think close captions were a part of pal broadcasting requirements. I have not seen any european tv with close captions. Most will have teletext which is totaly different and no ld has it. Some of the later japanese players r7g and s9 have ld-g decoders built in. I dont know if they decode CC ( probably not).

LD players don't decode CC, they have the signal, your TV decodes it.
this is not like LD+G, my old LD player didn't give me anything on screen, but when i bought my R7G
it gives me the LD+G which is totally different than CC

my TV has CC1 CC2 and text? i can't remember, but i do have Street Fighter, The (1975) (Uncut) [ID3368LI]
watching the film dubbed makes it sound like a comedy, but if i select Japanese audio and use CC it's a great film.
BUT i can't watch it on my projector since there is no CC on MY projector, don't know about others.
it all depends on the set, if you need it then you will have to get something like others are saying.

Note that CC was used on PAL VHS sometimes, because VHS did not have the stability or bandwidth needed for TeleText.

the picure you found was taken by me. Recently I sold this one.
It was made by E-teck with type number HQ-2000 It has both video and s-Video in and out. Also a remote controller with basic operation for almost any Pioneer ld player!
With this unit you can change background colors , subtitle colors , position on screen , larger fonts etc...
Other smaller models have only basic captioning such as a Mycap Junior but only have Composite in and out
