Hello! I have a Pioneer CLD-1750 Laserdisc player. The player is from '92 and I bought it used, complete with user manual and remote control. LD's plays fine, but sometimes I have problems playing compact discs. I have been troubleshooting to see if I could solve the problem, but unfortunately not. The disc tray just pops out the audio disc after trying to play it. Nothing seems to be wrong with the laser inside the unit, and the unit itself has been little used by the previous owner. Could the problem be related to the difference between 74 min. and 80 min. discs?

You specify 74 and 80, so are you talking about CDRs? CDRs should play, but it's not an advertised feature since they didn't exist for mainstream customer use back then. They should work, but there are no guarantees.
One main difference between CDs and LDs when it comes to a player like this is that the laser has to move about an inch closer to the spindle for a CD. It could be that that portion of the track is problematic from lack of use, old grease that has hardened, etc.

Thanks for reply. I guess there is little to do about it when I don't have any service manual. I normally don't play compact discs that often, but I was curious to hear the audio reproduction from the unit. When it actually plays music, it sounds superB! Maybe it is a dumb question or a dumb thought, but using this frequently, may it solve the problem? When I mentioned 74 min. and 80 min. I did not have CD-R in mind, but compact discs I have bought in stores.

If you take off the top and take a picture of the mechanical assembly I may be able to help you get this done.

Adjusting the spindle motor, is it an easy operation? This could be a simple process. Take a picture and send it to me at kbahr@comcast.net

I have gotten hold of a CLD-D925 , so I haven't paid much attention to my problems with the 1750 lately. I'm searching for a service manual, hopefully detailed so I can manage to do the adjustments. It may sound weird, but the player seems to play cd-singles, rather than albums.

I've never tried the CD function on any of my players, I really don't care lol, but i hear the DVL players have trouble with modern dvds so it seams plausible that your player just doesn't like modern CD's my old CLD-3070 would play any CD or CD-R i put in last time i used it about 2004. it would even play all the way to the end track on nirvana nevermind.

My CLD-D925 plays audio cd immediately, no matter if it is a cd of modern standard or one from the early nineties. Basically I would use the cd player of 1750 once in a while, just to prevent it from failing over time due to lack of use.
