I don't think I ever asked him what his most difficult LD repair was?

The toughest repair was replacing the starter in wife #2's Toyota

PR-7820s weren't too bad, tense when I drove an hour to do a repair at an IBM office and forgot my allen wrenches. Went to a local hardware store and bought a cheap set

Otherwise, the Theta Voyager is no picnic  Too many add ons surrounding the main Pioneer chassis :x :x :x

The Voyager looks like a freakin' monster as well. Is it unnecessarily heavy like Data II and III?

Yes it is, additional power transformers and the Pioneer chassis is bolted to the "new" outer case with two solid steel rails that act as risers keeping the chassis above the case. A lot of the construction was done with no thought to any needed service in the future

I just looked those things up. Sounds like they did a whole bunch of brute force over-engineering.

I think when replacing the laser optics from the cld-97 and most LD players before is The Grating adjustment to set the Tracking and focus beams. That was a long learning curve for me to get down correct and many older CD players had the same adjustment anytime the optics are replaced or if the player just seems not to track correctly. At least I didn't have to rattle Ldservice to bad on that, but Ldservice did give Grasshopper a lesson 101 on what I know.
