I have just bought a cld -2850 laserdisc player and it has a optical output. I didn't know that there was optical in 1993 when this player was made, I thought it was made a lot later than that. is it ok to connect the optical out on the player to a modern amp? if so do I need to connect the phono and the optical as well for analog and digital audio?

Yeah, it's the same as anything else. You can even get DTS from it even though DTS didn't exist when the machine was built.

You'll still need the RCA stereo connection though since the optical out will only output the digital. If you want to hear alternate languages, commentary, etc, you'll need the analog too.

thanks to a quick reply. how does it play dts if I have dts surround sound disc, do I have to do a modification to the player? I would have thought the player would have. to have a dts decoder or something? does dts on laderdisc work differently than on dvd?

You should be fine unless you want to play AC-3 discs which would require an rf demodulator which can be in an older reciever or using an an added one like Lexicon LDD-1 or Meridian 519 among others.
