Can it be done?

I own a spare unit model cld-d515. just for the fun of it I would like to try adding the optical output myself
There is AC-3rf out but no coaxial or optical output for dts playback.
I investigated the mother board on the cld-d515 and it seems that only a few components are missing when compared to the cld-d925 that has optical out.

If I would get me the missing parts out of a broken cld-d925 an solder them in the cld-d515 would it work? In theory I think it would. I compared them and found only two parts that differ around the optical out on the cld-d925 so that got me thinking... just solder them in and I am good to go...????

making the back panel a custom fit around the optical out would be the least of my problems. I have all toys available for that.

Even better would be adding a coaxial out but where to find the needed parts or DIY info?

Any suggestions?

It can. There are, however, possible issues. On the LD-V8000, for example, a version of the CD/EFM decoder IC, which handles digital audio, was used which does not have a SPDIF output (instead, the clock signal is output at those pins), even though there are traces on the circuit board for the necessary components. I have the other version of the IC in a static bag, & have been trying to work up the gumption to swap them, but changing out 80-pin surface-mount chips is not precisely child's play.

On the newer players it is true that there are parts that are just not put on the boards and depending on what is is the firmware knows what to do. In case of the SDPIF output, yes it does output a single so all you have to do is install all the components to take it out.

Thanks for helping out on this.
I can only see a resistor and the actual optical output plug that seems missing on the cld-d515 board when compared to the cld-d925 board.
Since the 925 suffered shipping damage at one point it won't be a big loss if it doesn't work out. the main reason I bought it a few years ago was having a donor circuit board for these purposes not to mention the other spare parts such as the power supply etc...
The 515 is not high end but it's a shame it does not output dts as a standard.

I knew someone around here would be able to help out on this.
Thanks for the advice

Why not simply swap in the board from the 925?

changing the whole thing was my first idea but it turns out that the other board inside the player is not compatible as it has other connections.

Soldered the optical out in... got the red laser light working but no audio output! I think it might be a firmwire thing. Any ideas?

Not planning on giving up just yet...

Check the ID code on the chip that feeds the digital output circuit. There may be a difference in the last digit, in which case you have the problem I described : your digital output is putting out a null signal.

I guess the 925 was really trashed, cause I would have gotten it fixed if it could have been.

What I did with my 515 was to connect it to a Sony (right, the brand we all love to hate for whatever reason, but sometimes they do something right) RF demodulator model SDP-E800, not the simpleminded MOD-RF1.

The E800 accepts both the AC3 input and the two channel analog audio, and outputs both an optical digital 5.1 signal or a separated 6 channel analog audio signal. Of course you'd need an amp/receiver with the inputs for 6 analog channels.

This unit does the best I've heard for separating the matrixed analog pro-logic signal into 6 separate and distinct channels. But still this wouldn't be of any help for playing the DTS discs, so I have to have another player for that. Forunately the E800 has additional inputs for coaxial and optical and the second player can go through it as well as a DVD player, and there's automatic sensing of the active audio input as well

My understanding is a digital coaxial signal could be obtained easily from a toslink signal. It only requires stepping down the signal going to the optical output with two resistors than feeding that into an RCA jack and grounding the jack.

You can get a toslink to coaxial converter box, as an external thing.
No need to mess around with electronics.

Maybe I have to follow the whole circuit path for the optical output...? It could be I forgot to solder some component in at one point....
Around the actual toslink output I only found two parts that where missing when compared to the 925 board.

Does anybody have a service manual available for the 515? I would like to compare the 925SM with the 515SM maybe I missed something hardware related...

Now that's well done!

How about writing that all up as a summary post?
