Good observations. You're right, one may need to step even further forward in the pick-up circuitry and tap before the initial filter(s) that turn the PWM of the pits/lands into an analog representation of the original waveform.

In reality, if the pits and lands are not defined, you wouldn't be able to recreate the original signal. They have a purpose, and their lengths are read by the laser. It isn't a black magic random mirror thing.
