I should know this, because it's probably been mentioned on this site before, but . . .

I got a Pioneer DVL-V888 combo player. It appears it's getting some rolling interference static when playing back LDs. See YouTube video here:

LD Interference

Happens for any LD I play on it, so it's not with the discs. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Does it happen with DVD's or VCD's?

edit: and does the pattern change on CAV disks?

The LD and DVD playback is decoded on completely different boards so the problem would only be the power supply or relay that chooses which video signal to output if this happens with DVD's too.

What you are seeing is laserdisc dropouts, have you played these on other LD players?. If these discs play fine in other players then either the RF level is low or your having issues with the digital frame storage used for video processing, if the laser RF is low you would also have no digital sound, only analog audio soundtrack. Try cleaning the laser lens.

Hopefully it is not the digital frame storage as that is on the main boards and expensive but it really looks like dropouts from issues reading the signal off the LD.

It's only happening with LDs so I'll try to clean the lens.

I have an Audio Technica cleaning LD. Is that recommended or should I just use a medical cotton swab?

You should throw the cleaning LD away. The ring around the lens is plastic and you may buff the plastic over the lens, The plastic will touch the disc as it goes up as its job is to protect the lens. Open the player and properly clean.

Is denatured alcohol recommended or would 91% alcohol work?

Well that seemed to do it! Opened the LD tray and opened the bonnet of the player. Swabbed the lens a few times with some higher grade cotton swabs and 91% alcohol. The static was lessened quite a bit, but after playing a disc all the way through, it pretty much disappeared!

Thanks for all your help!
