I just bought a CLD-D503 on ebay for very little, it may have issues but between it and my other 503 I may be able to get 1 reliable unit.
Though I like this player very much, one drawback however is the lack of any line level digital out, I got thinking if I get this player to work, of the possibility of adding a digital out, I've never attempted anything like this, so I don't know how feasible or even possible it is. I know there is a lot about ac3 modding, but not much on adding coax/toslink.
Any thoughts on this?

You'll need the schematic, but the service guide's block diagram has an optical output on the 503/570, so it's probable there are traces brought out with the digital output from the EFM/CD-audio decoder that you can hook into - and cross-referencing with 703/704 schematics it should be possible to add the optical output Pioneer left out.

One or both players probably needs a new rubber grip ring, very common issue with the 503/70x/2950-type players.

You might be able to adapt this project http://www.gamesx.com/wiki/doku.php?id=av:saturn_sp_dif

You'll have to do some research on the DAC in the 503 to determine of it's compatible. My guess is that it being a later model player, the DAC is something off the shelf that can output s/pdif but was never implemented.

The same output from the IC used for the optical signal is split and sent it a circuit for the coax signal. It takes more parts to do a coax output so it is not always there.

Interesting the block diagram includes optical, I think this explains why the Marantz lv510 ( I believe 503 clone) has optical out.
seems like it could be fairly straight forward, I prefer coax but seems like extra work, and probably past my skills, optical would be good enough.

Thanks for the info everyone, might give this a shot.

The datasheet for the DSP chip seems to imply that it can directly drive an optical transmitter. Give it a shot, and good luck!

And if you want to get really hackish about it, setting a red LED for spdif is pretty easy: http://www.hardwarebook.info/S/PDIF_optical

Well I got the second player today, unfortunately this player has issues, it was working ok until I reinserted the tray, now it will not respond to any commands, front display works and reads open, close etc, but mechanically nothing, no pickup movement, no loading motor, totally dead. I'm thinking power supply or maybe lose ribbon cable somewhere, not sure I will have to look at more later.

First player does function, however it will no longer play LDs, there is something in the video circuit when it reads the disc, it does play CDs ok though.

Edit: swapped power supplies between players and no change, problem must lie elsewhere...

First player (if this is a 503), You need to check the electrolytic caps on the main board video circuits as they can go bad and take out the IC fuses also in the video section, If this happens CDs will play fine but LDs will not play. You'll have to go thru the board testing voltages.

Second player, remove the tray to try to get it working again. The tray should never hit anything but if the tabs in the mechanical assembly to signal the processor for loading are bad then you have problems.

I got second player functioning better, and was able to get it to load an LD, unfortunately it will not play either LD or CD, LD does try to spin but spins down immediately, CD will not spin it all, when trying to play CD pickup moves all the way forward, then gets stuck and will not move back unless gears are turned manually, also in LD mode sometimes player will stop functioning until pickup is returned to rest position.

First player has only LD play issue, but also it has loading issues, the pickup assembly will not lift fully by itself,
also tray will get stuck sometimes when closing.
Grip ring and Belt were replaced on first player.

I will try and make a video to show some of the issues with the players
and yes both are 503s

The CL-D505 has a spot on the PCB for an optical transmitter. When I get the part in I'll see if it's as simple as soldering it in or if it's more involved.

There is a good chance the empty pad for the optical out on the 505 has all the needed resistors, capacitors, etc. running from there to the DSP chip but the only way to know is to pull the board to see if everything is connected.

On the 504, it was found to be all intact so adding it was just as simple as soldering in an optical output jack. On the 503, that was not the case so it was a lot more work to deal with.

I successfully added an SPDIF transmitter (Toshiba TX179L) to the CLD-D505. Here is the method:
- Solder optical transmitter to the empty slot on the PCB beside the RCA audio out
- Add 10uF 16V capacitor to C895
- bridge W118
- bridge R8001

I drilled a hole with an impact bit and shaped it with a rotary tool

Thanks to GC8TECH for the help with this
