I don't know if I'd be comfortable using tweezers like that..

They make lens cleaning disc's for dvds and BD's. I've seen some for LD's as well. Anyone ever use one here?

There is a plastic ring top that protects the lens from touching the spinning disc. A cleaning disc would just polish the plastic ring and possibly put sediment on the actual lens.

Best practice, NEVER CLEAN until it doesn't play and you want to try to get it working. Or have it cleaned properly by opening the unit and using a chamois swab and a residual free non abrasive cleaning solution. Liquid Freon was the best there ever was for this but you cannot get that anymore.

I’ve never successfully fixed an issue with an optical drive by cleaning the lens. Don’t get your hopes up, and don’t obliterate the lens trying to scrub non-existent filth off it. You may find the real fix some day.

I've twice made a non-playing or unreliable player work by cleaning the lens.
In one case it was a CD player which had been through a house fire. In the other, it was a LD player in which I found half a cockroach, with the remainder of the bug being spattered around the interior of the machine.

What solution did you use?

This is an old post ,butt Im gonna put my two cents in anyway…might help someone….I have a Panasonic LX900U(bought for Runco parts)..had maybe 10hrs on it.. ..put on a shelf for 5 years(before I knew better)..When I Took it down and tried to play it ..I got the dreaded “No Disc” error…opened it up,..the Lense had an obvious film over it..cleaned it..q-tip (lightly damp)and distilled water..that did the job…Only thing I can figure is it was boxed in its original packing..Out Gassing? …from the styrofoam, plastic bag?…Internals?
