Post subject:  Which capture card do you recommend?
I am going to capture laserdiscs using a CLD-97 and the DMR-ES25 as a pass-through (unless someone has a better comb filter recommendation?) but I don't know which capture card to get.

In selecting a capture card, the most important factor for me is one that does not trigger AGC and alter the image. Any advice? Thanks in advance!

I got the card mentioned here in this thread--the ATi 750 PCIe. Has a really good 3D comb filter, and excellent color reproduction.

It's not made anymore, but you can probably still find some new, old stock on Ebay.

I used to use the Pinnacle capture products, but the first one I got, Pinnacle Movie Board, didn't support 64-bit Operating Systems. Then I got one of the USB capture cards, but then I realized it wouldn't capture with decent color reproduction even if you used an off-board 3D comb filter like a DVD recorder.

I still use Pinnacle Studio as the software is pretty easy to use and has a lot of options for exporting your project, but the hardware is lacking for capturing.

I'm capturing HK/Mainland films. Some of these films were never released on DVD, for others the laserdisc is the superior version, and for some I need the original LD mono audio because the DVD/blu-ray audios have new foley sound effects added in.

Thanks. Another LD collector on another forum also recommended this capture card, but he warned that it does trigger AGC on some players. Fingers crossed that that's not the case with the CLD-97.

Yeah, that sounds like a great project that people would actually benefit from. (Ie: not someone remixing Blue Harvest for the 800000th time).

I’m curious about the sound FX... :)

Unfortunately that kinda stuff is the norm for remastered releases of old Hong Kong movies... And in rare cases where the original mono audio is included, it's heavily compressed.

No, I use the A/V cables to capture audio, but I want to get as good a reproduction as I can, I get a little tricky with how I connect that.

I run the optical audio out from my LD player to my Yamaha MDX-793 Minidisc recorder (since it has a 20-bit DAC) and the analog audio out to the capture card.

Thanks for the replies. So I take it capturing digital audio on the ATI 750 without a passthrough is not advisable?

Yeah, I don't think I've come across a video capture card that has a digital audio input.

I mean, you can get audio cards that have digital inputs for audio (I have an external one from Creative), but getting them to work with video capture software--I was never able to.

Well my ATI 750 PCIe arrived today but I believe it's DOA. I tried both the composite and s-video connections but all I get is the black screen of death in virtualdub and ArcSoft. I've downloaded the updated drivers from the Diamond website and tried different PCIe slots in my PC, but nada.

Gonna order it again; this time I'll make sure to select ground shipping. Looking forward to uploading sample clips once I get it!

Okay, I have to revise this.

I have found a capture card that has a digital input for sound . . .

Hauppage Colossus 2 1577

. . . only caveat is, the only options for video input are HDMI and Component. Guess it would work well for capturing LD if you used a DVD recorder with a decent comb filter as a bridge between the two.

Well the new ATi 750 PCIe didn't work either. Guess this card just doesn't mesh well with my OS (windows 8.1 x64).

I use Windows 7 64-bit. Made sure I never touched Windows 8.

It's possible the card isn't compatible with anything beyond Windows 7
