Recently picked up an RCA LDR400 (which might be a rebranded Phillips CDV-400). The unit plays both sides, but upon finishing side B the machine lets out a terrifying noise. Issue occurs with CAV discs, I have no others to test Audio CDs played through without issue Unit is on level & stable surface, all four feet are firmly planted Pausing prematurely and powering off causes no such noise This is my first foray into the world of disco, I've no doubt this is a novice question, but I can't find any results. Is it normal to hear the disc aggressively slowing down? |

So the noise is when its changing sides? Or as you post only after side B is over? The laser starts at side A then flips to side B then after the disc is done playing it will make a noise to get back to the original position. Unknown if the sound you hear is correct or not, easier to post a video so we can hear if the noise is normal but then again it probably is and you are just used to quite playing things like DVD or bluray. |

Switching sides doesn't produce any unusual sound, just the regular mechanical switching and clicking. This only occurs when the players reaches the end for playback. Wasn't drawing a comparison to modern players, I should stress that. Not-quite-blender-loud, but much louder than a high-speed VCR rewind. Each time it occurred, I shut the player off just to be safe. I'll set up a mic and try to capture it. |

This normally happens when the pickup assembly transitions from the playback guide rail to the turn mechanism guide rail. This needs new grease applied. |

Did some homework, and ordered 1oz of Molykote EM-30L. Will continue to read up. |

The tracking gear which moves the pickup back and forth is also used to lift the pickup and turn it upside down for side-b playback. When flipping back over, the pickup moves off of the tracking bar, onto the flip mechanism (which simply does a U-Turn) and then engages with the tracking bar down below. If the transition from the side-B bar to the u-turn bar is off slightly, the pickup will jam and that noise you hear is the tracking gear grinding on the track. I suspect if you give the player a little jolt it will jostle the pickup enough to hop back onto the u-turn bar and complete the flip. Best to take the bonnet off and make sure the slider mechanism is smooth all the way around and hasn't jumped out of any of it's guides. I had very similar issues with a CLD-59 player. |

As blam1 says, it is a Pioneer unit and probably a CLD-2090 chassis if I recall since it’s similar to my ProScan, PSLD43 (just no shuttle control on the front panel and remote). I wasn’t sure what to make of the description of the “rewind noise” since everyone may have a different perception of what that sounds like. And since it only happens at the end of Side B, I never recalled any issues on any of my Alpha Turn units exhibiting this problem (unless we’re talking about the normal “thump” noises that are made as the laser returns to the bottom, then there is no problem). Maybe the best thing to do is post a video of the occurance on YouTube so we can better evaluate it (and with the cover removed so we can see the mechanism do its thing). |

It is a metal rod that the laser assemble rides on. |
