In case anyone is curious, or can offer further advice, here is a recording. https://vocaroo.com/i/s0lT7vdEoQX000:00-00:07 regular playback 00:08-00:13 unlisted track/SMPTE bars (trimmed sample, originally 45 seconds) 00:14-00:19 noise in question 00:19 turned off player The LDR400 is actually a Pioneer player. The tracking gear which moves the pickup back and forth is also used to lift the pickup and turn it upside down for side-b playback. When flipping back over, the pickup moves off of the tracking bar, onto the flip mechanism (which simply does a U-Turn) and then engages with the tracking bar down below. If the transition from the side-B bar to the u-turn bar is off slightly, the pickup will jam and that noise you hear is the tracking gear grinding on the track. I suspect if you give the player a little jolt it will jostle the pickup enough to hop back onto the u-turn bar and complete the flip. Best to take the bonnet off and make sure the slider mechanism is smooth all the way around and hasn't jumped out of any of it's guides. I had very similar issues with a CLD-59 player.
