North America is 120 volts and Japan is 100 volts, but this transformer I have is rated for 110 volts, it works for the US model blu-ray player I have but can I also use it for Japanese devices or do I need to hunt down a converted specified specifically for 100 volts? |

Usually if you don't use the cheapest stuff you have some tolerance. Your voltages are never 100% correct. The transformers usually only bisect the voltage from your outlet (240 = 120 / 230 = 115 / 220 = 110V) But you should check if your device works with a current frequency of 50 Hz instead of 60 Hz. I use my transformer for Japanese (Audio DAC) and American (LD Player) electronics at the same time (two outlets). |

You don’t need to be more accurate that that. You’re fine. |

Speaking of step-down converters, what brands are considered quality? In terms of build quality, etc. Have been running a "Seven star", a cheaper chinese brand I would assume, step-down converter for years now. I have noticed the plastics are now bulging and developing cracks so I don't think it will be safe enough for future use. Why risk an expensive unit when I can replace the most critical component in the chain that breathes life into the player? |
