Your tv isn't NTSC compatible? Been many years since I've seen a PAL only tv here.

How old is your TV?

Most (all?) TVs sold over quite a number of years now should play your NTSC LDs with no issues.

And if you have a combi player, pretty sure those let you convert NTSC to PAL output internally too? Mine does and it's about as bog standard a model as it gets.

Yep. The 925 has a button on it to switch between pal/ntsc mode. If your tv doesn't support ntsc than press the button.

You say you have distortion? What kind? As far as I know the picture would only be black and white if it cant display ntsc? I had an old trinitron like that. Press the button on the player and the colour would pop in. What player do you have?

I still kick myself for not finding this button before -- that was years ago.

I used to think the CLD-D925 was great in PAL but OK in NTSC... until I switched the button from NTSC-> PAL to pure NTSC and suddenly the picture quality jumped!

Tip: When you play an NTSC format LD, it is recommended to switch the player to NTSC if your TV set is switchable to NTSC fornat.

Very recommended!

Me too, it took a while to notice the system button, even though the 925 is my main player, it's just that my first ntsc acquisition is still fairly recent and I still have less than 10 ntsc titles.
But I tinkered a bit with it and, to be honest, I found the picture of the 925 in ntsc mode is not great (tried it on a few tvs, old and new), there is a lot of aliasing on the edges of everything in the picture (because of ntsc's lower resolution ?) and I find the pal modulated mode to give a really cleaner picture, even though it comes at a loss of colors, it's still redeemable by turning up the color saturation on the tv's settings and it then gives a really nice and clean image for my ntsc discs.

As for the op's issue, we'll need to know what tv you're using to try and help you.
