Recently my CLD-R7g started taking extra long to change sides. It flips from side A to side B and it takes a while to start up side B. Eventually it does but what could be causing it to take longer to do so? Any ideas or tips would be appreciated.
Thanks

Did you try playing side B first then have it flip to A and see if it takes that same length?

Also from what I remember there is a quick flip button on the front, is that pressed?

And does this do it with all discs or just this one?

Had this problem with my x9. Kurtis advised me that the grip ring could be on it's way out or that maybe it needs a clean. Luckily my x9 has performed flawlessly since then so I never changed it.

Yes this is a case with most but the R7G has no issues with grip ring, it has that white stuff not the black rubber ring.

You need to describe the sounds it’s making. LD players are very mechanical in nature and you can basically tell what they’re trying to do in there by listening. Maybe you can get a video.

Grip ring slippage can for sure cause this but I don’t know about it happening on a R7G. It happens on 99s and 604s regularly depending on the grip of the LD label. You can ignore it for years on end.

Does the side change take longer if you switch from A to B when playing the beginning of side A? Or will the side changes take the same amount of time if it happens as Side A ends? If you start Side A and shut the power off does it take a long time to power down?

It has done it 3 times on different discs. It seems to just spin for a bit and then finally find the side. It did not do it last night but I will see next time if I can get a video. I will also look at the grip ring. Thank you for the advice.

This player has NO issue with grip ring, you start messing with that you will botch your player.

Does this play CDs??? Centering may be off for side B.
This is just a guess as I am no tech and you do any repairs at your own risk.

It is NOT the grip ring on this player, this player has a white material that won't go bad, its a plastic type with little nubs.
I did own an R7G and know what I'm talking about with that.

It was part of the plastic to spin the disc, you can remove if you scrape and cut it off but DO NOT DO THIS.
It is not a stick on rubber disc like other players have.

This player DOES NOT HAVE THE BLACK RUBBER GRIP RING. Please don't destory this player because it won't play your 3 discs.

I agree. It’s probably not the grip ring. If it was or wasn’t, either way, we could tell with a video. At this point we don’t know your experience level with LDs so for all we know you’re imagining the issue. You haven’t specifically said how long it seems to hang. You just said “a bit” or “longer” but that’s up to interpretation. There are many many many many posts here by people here over the years trying to solve issues that aren’t even real, so first we need to be sure it’s an actual problem.

If it takes two seconds longer sometimes to find a side but plays fine all the way through after that then...screw it. I wouldn’t even bother opening it. If it takes 10-20 seconds then something is probably failing in the upper track or it needs adjustment, which is way beyond the skills of an average user.

If you do post a video please made sure we can see the display and clearly hear the works inside.

ok. I will not mess with it. I love this player and would not want to mess anything up. I never play CDs on my laserdisc player but I can try one. I watched a movie last night and the side change was fine. When it has done it, it normally takes twice as long to change side like it is searching for side two starting point. I will try and capture it on video. Thanks for your help guys.

I would check the side B centering. If good then it could just be a certain disc.

On the top near the spindle motor is a small screw you loosen and then next to it is an adjuster you turn to move the guide rail side to side. Find the two limits where playback start to break up while playing the inner ttrack and then center the adjuster between those limits and tighten the screw. That should be close enough to work fine. You need an oscilloscope and other items to do it properly.

I absolutely agree with the Side B centering, but I wouldn't expect that to drift unless the set screw was loose, or you've changed the pickup. If you enable "Quick Turn" (which disables TOC reading), does the issue improve?
