My venerable CDP-991 started ejecting discs and not playing them 9 tries out of ten. When it reads it plays fine.

What ballpark problem am I looking at here? Weak laser?

Well my CDP problems led me to play more amazing sounding MDs I made in the '90s this night so it hasn't been a total loss. How can a lossy format like MD sound SO good?

Right now listening to TOM★CAT self titled from 1985, dubbed via optical onto MD from my Japanese housemate's CD in 1998.

This is quite an interesting read based on that model.

Could be the belt has lost torque and isn't operating as it should. If you had a scope you could test the laser output.

Thanks for that. Yeah it does look like an interesting article for me. I suspect it's not the belt, as the tray fully closes, it may be the contacts that detect closure, first thing I'll do is spray some WD40 contact cleaner on those and report back.

This is what I'm using, much cheaper than Deoxit here:

Should be the same kind of stuff?

The WD-40 specialist contact cleaner should be fine. It leaves no residue.

It isn't the standard WD-40 used for squeaky hinges, rusted bolts and the like. That stuff shouldn't be used on electrical.

Well I still haven't opened the sucker up. I figured out if I clear the mech with a no disc read and then do a disc it works. I know it still isn't optimum so I will get at it at some stage but I'm too busy enjoying CDs right now to care. Maybe I should just get that ES CDP I always wanted (luckily been working through Covid and have some cash) instead of trying to keep this thing I paid $200 for going. Only thing is it sounds great, looks fine and cues up fast...hmmm

When you spray the contact cleaner make sure you isolate the laser lens from any air displacement. Lenses can be very sensitive.
