I don't feel that I'd ever personally need one of these but of course that's not what this is about therefore I would suggest if other members were prepared to do the same I'd happily chuck in a $/€/£ or so towards a purchase, what do others think? Ultimately... someone contacted me some time ago to work on a phone app that connects to an Infra Red module and could be able to emulate any remote control for which we have a signal list. This way we'd just have to learn controls once and have them available to others forever. Never a lost remote control because we wouldn't need them. So... would piling up 48 basic remote controls make sense? Julien I think there will always be a market as many people rather have an actual remote control vs an emulator. Also, as time goes on remotes will be lost/broken and people will want replacements. You can certainly ask for a reasonable markup and would recover any upfront costs.

Whoops! I misread this part: "I should improve my googling skills, Pioneer was still officially servicing CLD-R5 and CLD-R7G."

Makes absolutely no sense to me from a business point of view. But then Japanese companies are not famous for being rational and business-minded. They'd rather stick to the established rules and never, ever step aside from what their management told them to do. Whoever takes such a decision could be blamed internally. => Look for "new old stock" on YAJ if they already have a secret deal to turn over these parts through a friendly 3rd-party company... Extending the remote control buying window by a week is probably the best they could do but... what a wasteful way to handle anything. I'll buy a dozen (keeping that budget below Y30,000). That's the only thing I can really do now that the door shut close after Sept 30th. Julien

That's the only thing I can really do now that the door shut close after Sept 30th. Julien You’re right about all of this, of course. But it’s not a money question, it’s a do the correct thing question. Pioneer never sold an LD player that said “user serviceable parts inside”. They don’t feel like changing their mind on that. People are dumber than ever. If one person electrocutes themselves working on a player with the intent to replace a part that cost $4.36 it would be a potentially catastrophic loss to the company as well. Those parts are precious to us but to Pioneer it’s just a stack of junk that is long paid for and they’ve been waiting years and years to dump. The only chance would have been to have them sell to a third party established professional operation, a lateral move for the parts. That would have very little chance as well but it’s the only possibility I can envision. Despite this I can name very few products with this level of dedication to quality. Probably none are as cheap as an LD player. GM won’t even sell pre-bankruptcy parts anymore, for example.

Servicing date: October 3rd 2020 Since there were only advertising CLD-R5 and CLD-R7G for servicing until the deadline, I'm quite sure this is the last S9 that Pioneer will ever service! They did a little more than I expected: - VWT1100 (carrier assy w/ cable)
- VEB1184 (belt)
- DEB1169 (rubber sheet)
- VNL1663 (thrust holder)
- VEB1114 (cushion rubber sheet)
Tested (of course!) the player right away for issue and it works fine. It's even a little more quiet than before and the fresh rubber sheets spin the discs up faster than before. Mission accomplished! Julien

Glad you have your player back & all good. As you said it must be among the last that PIONEER will have worked on. Such a pity though that the remaining parts they held will be lost to a recycling plant or a landfill, rather sad but thanks for trying. Cheers .

Final update to the LD Support page (for Japan) was on November 17th, 2020 (FAQ on November 13th): https://jpn.pioneer/ja/support/oshirase_etc/ld_info/https://jpn.pioneer/ja/support/oshirase_etc/ld_info/qa.php(Google translation) Quote: For customers who use laser disc players ~ Notice of discontinuation of production ~ (2009/1/14)
Thank you for your continued patronage of our products.
Since the launch of the laser disc player in October 1981, we have sold a total of approximately 3.6 million units in Japan, and have been favored by many customers. Thank you very much.
As new media such as DVDs and BDs (Blu-ray Discs) have become established in the market these days, it has become difficult to procure dedicated parts necessary for production, and it is unavoidable that after about 3000 units to be manufactured (DVL-919, CLD-R5, DVK-900, DVL-K88) production will end the production of laser disc players.
Notice of end of after-sales service (2020/11/17)
We have set a retention period for repair parts in order to support repairs after the warranty period has expired. The holding period of repair performance parts (parts necessary to maintain the function of the product) of the laser disc player is 8 years from the end of production of each model. In addition, even after this holding period has passed, if there are parts, we will repair them, but since the parts inventory has run out, we have terminated the after-sales service. [FAQ]Quote: Why did you end production? (2009/1/14)
It became difficult to continue the business because it became difficult to procure the main parts necessary for the continuous production of laser disc players in the future.
My current laserdisc player is out of order, can it be repaired? (2020/11/13)
We have held and repaired performance parts for each model for eight years, starting from the end of product production. In addition, we have been dealing with parts after that, but we have terminated the after-sales service because the parts inventory has run out.
Can you tell me when the production will end for each model? (2009/1/14)
DVL-K88: July 2009 DVK-900: June 2009 DVL-919, CLD-R5: May 2009 HLD-X9: July 2002 DVL-H9, LD-S9: June 2002
All More than 8 years have passed since the end of production of laser disc players.
Is it possible to continue to make inquiries regarding operations and usage other than repairs? (2020/11/13)
We will continue to support you as before.
