I probably clean mine every 2-3 months or so. I open the case and wipe out any dust I can find. Is this crazy OCD or will this in the long-run help the player age better? I'm trying to make my laserdisc player last longer. Especially since the prices of autoreverse and both sides laserdisc players on Ebay have been selling for ridiculous amounts of money lately. It seems like players have gone up a lot lately. When I bought my Panasonic LX-H670 back in February I snagged it for about 85 or 90 bucks or so. Now I see players like this sell for 150-250 range which I find quite ridiculous. I also used to own this same player back in 2015 or 2016 but ended up selling it. I wasn't as serious about collecting laserdiscs back at that time period because I knew it was not cheap to collect movies and I knew it's an addiction I would get into. It was only coincidence that I ended up with Panasonic again and my previous player that I sold which was the same LX-H670 has a big indent on the top of the case but that didn't hurt the laserdisc player at all for the short amount of time I had that for.

Is that crazy OCD? It does collects some dust so it's not like I'm cleaning It for no reason. Maybe my house is prone to dust or maybe the laserdisc player is a dust magnet. Now I'm not saying it's a ridiculous amount of dust. It's just dust I am able to wipe off the inside of the player. I treat the laserdisc player as if it was my own child. I care for it's health. Am I crazy? I view it as my baby.

Yeah, that would be extremely excessive and isn’t going to help. You’re eventually going to break something by accident from working on it constantly for no reason.

Yes you are crazy, even more that you think this is your baby.

Get a dog, cat, significant other or adopt an actual baby to deal with these issues.
Possibly a hobby that is exercise oriented or other than devices/worldly possessions.

Opening it every 2-3 months will kill it before the dust does.

You should only open up a player if it's absolutely necessary.

I do open my players quite a bit but only because I work on AC3 mods or if the player is broken & it obviously needs to be worked on (never felt a need to clean a player unless it started out really grimy). If you are so OCD about your player breaking down, you pretty much need to do what a majority of us do to keep our collections viewable and that is to acquire as many back up players as you can. God knows my wife is pissed @ me now for having accumulated 14 players .

I have 5 keepers. I don't even want to begin tallying the parts units or "waiting for parts" units though. I'm going to have to revise those once I get all of my LDs situated.

It is more important to never put a player in a closed cabinet, keep fresh air around the unit so it doesn’t overheat.

The disc spinning creates enough air movement to keep the laser lens clean.

The only thing I think of when cleaning the player is to dust off the top and the sides. The only area I would really clean with some pure alcohol is the tray where the laserdisc rests, I feel this area collects dust and particles/grease. You really don't want filthy laserdiscs, so this should be enough to help keep the inside clean. I wouldn't put too much pressure on the tray, as the older ones are of a thinner construction and can easily break off the teeths on the underside. I second Krbahr when he says the circulating air from the disc spinning keeps the laser lens clean.

alcohol will possibly cause damage, can sometimes remove types of paint etc.
some of these things are printed with inks that are alcohol based and you can remove stuff, not fun.
Also could leave a foggy film on some plastics.

I remember reading a post from another ocd that took alcohol to their LD-S9 that has the fuzzy flocked on the tray,
took it all off  then tried to find another tray to fix their mistake.

Yeah I wouldn't use anything on the CLD-99 "velvet" type trays. I do remember that guy who melted his.

Good point! I think we can say for sure, is it worth the risk?
Better try on a small area first to see if it affects the plastic and go on from there. In the end, you are all on your own if the cleaning fails.

Same on the CLD-97 and possibly all the Elite 90 series in general. My 97 has a pretty disgusting looking tray so I have been considering getting a new tray or even see if there is a procedure to re-coat it.
