Early this winter I was flipping through vinyl records at Goodwill and I found a LaserDisc copy of "Lorenzo's Oil" mixed in with them for $2. I figured why not; I'd been getting into older formats since my grandfather passed a few years ago, and I knew I'd be getting a LaserDisc player at some point down the road. Sure enough, a couple days ago I found a Pioneer CLD-V101 at Habitat For Humanity.

Great shape, clean, fresh grease, plays my one movie like a champ! No manual or remote, but I'll get there. Google may yield a billion results, but none of them are the ones I'm looking for... that's why I came to the pros.

I will post my issues in the (hopefully) appropriate sections.

Almost like the thing was right out of the box. I think I was expecting some sort of menu, so the blue screen with the block white text reminds me of my VCRs. But it spins right up, the laser does its thing, it recognizes it as LD, and side a and b, then goes right into playing. Plays both sides of both discs, even this guy...

Visually and audibly, it also reminds me of VHS. Though I have a couple good Sonys and a really good Sony surround setup I got back in college. I'm sure I'll also have to do some tweaking.

Yes you will need to do some major adjusting, this should be a very slight step down from DVD when calibrated correctly.
Only reason DVD won was due to the costs, DVD was just cheaper all around.

Definitely not "only reason." DVD runs laps around LD when it comes to maximum playtime, the players are much quieter, and the discs don't take up that much space. I think even if the prices had been comparable DVD would have won out due to the convenience factors.

There's also the fact that DVD supported multiple audio and subtitle streams as a standard, making it a lot more feasible on the European market where you no longer had to press a different copy for each language market.

Is that a 4:3 turtle stretched to Wide?

Looks that way, OP needs to know and understand aspect ratio hopefully before too long, and also stretched molediver....

I do understand aspect ratios. I'm not new to life, just owning LD. I'm still at the poking-and-prodding phase with the player.

Ok. Well LDs are SD and therefore never output a signal that needs to be stretched unless you’re watching a Squeeze LD (which nobody ever does because they barely made any) or unless the movie is letterboxed or open matte in which case Zoom can be used but it has to be an actual zoom, not just warping the movie to make everyone fatter and the moon an oval.

No worries. As you can see above, though, this forum isn't devoid of members who are bizarrely invested in getting aspect ratios wrong.

Tatsuke, wasn't trying to bash you, you have been on a long time but you do only have that one pic of molediver.
Post a new one that isn't stretched please.

This better? I still had my TV's composite input set to Panorama; it's old enough that the older stuff running through the switchbox (NES, N64, original Xbox) still looks good (to me) stretched from 4:3 to 16:9. It doesn't seem to make things look as bad as I've seen on much newer TVs.

Movie quality is a good bit better, need to try something with a bit more oomph. Probably gonna try MIB later tonight.

Edit: I went digging into all my TV's settings and dropped everything back to default... Looks way better. I don't know what I was thinking.

Welcome!

Yep!

Try setting sharpness to 0 or 1. Then when you put in a widescreen disc like MIB match black bars on bottom to the ones on side and then you can watch it 4:3 or zoom.

Sometimes you lose a little with zooming out the black bars etc and you are better off just straight 4.3
My projector is older but it can zoom and also enlarge the 4.3 and it gives a better image rather than blowing up internally.
