Early this winter I was flipping through vinyl records at Goodwill and I found a LaserDisc copy of "Lorenzo's Oil" mixed in with them for $2. I figured why not; I'd been getting into older formats since my grandfather passed a few years ago, and I knew I'd be getting a LaserDisc player at some point down the road. Sure enough, a couple days ago I found a Pioneer CLD-V101 at Habitat For Humanity. Attachment:

Great shape, clean, fresh grease, plays my one movie like a champ! No manual or remote, but I'll get there. Google may yield a billion results, but none of them are the ones I'm looking for... that's why I came to the pros. I will post my issues in the (hopefully) appropriate sections.

Almost like the thing was right out of the box. I think I was expecting some sort of menu, so the blue screen with the block white text reminds me of my VCRs. But it spins right up, the laser does its thing, it recognizes it as LD, and side a and b, then goes right into playing. Plays both sides of both discs, even this guy... Attachment:

Visually and audibly, it also reminds me of VHS. Though I have a couple good Sonys and a really good Sony surround setup I got back in college. I'm sure I'll also have to do some tweaking.

Only reason DVD won was due to the costs, DVD was just cheaper all around.

This better? I still had my TV's composite input set to Panorama; it's old enough that the older stuff running through the switchbox (NES, N64, original Xbox) still looks good (to me) stretched from 4:3 to 16:9. It doesn't seem to make things look as bad as I've seen on much newer TVs. Movie quality is a good bit better, need to try something with a bit more oomph. Probably gonna try MIB later tonight. Edit: I went digging into all my TV's settings and dropped everything back to default... Looks way better. I don't know what I was thinking.

Welcome! heenster wrote: This better? Yep! Try setting sharpness to 0 or 1. Then when you put in a widescreen disc like MIB match black bars on bottom to the ones on side and then you can watch it 4:3 or zoom.
