Hello all,
I am a Laserdisc fan from Spain.
I developed some interest in Laserdisc system in the early 2000's, after I discovered that players' prices were ridiculously down.
I got a second-hand CDL-900s very cheap and a bunch of discs.
I discovered that image quality was just fair, due to composite video... but was impressed on the audio quality.
I remember listening "Golden Eye" opening scenes and got amazed then.
Later, I managed to get a Sony MDP-533D also very cheap and some more discs. This one is a nice model: RGB capable, PAL and NTSC compatible, which delivers a (somewhat) better picture.
As an MSX enthusiast, I got the idea to connect a regular player to the system so, over the years, I got a Laserdisc-compatible MSX: The Pioneer PX-7 UK version. I was luck then, as I purchased from UK for about 80 euro, including manuals, soft cartridges and a touch-pad.
I know that only some special models can be connected to these MSXs but, I was convinced that a regular player could be controlled instead.
Back then, suitable players and Laserdisc games were so rare and expensive but, after some years, some special players became affordable (but still expensive), so I purchased a very cheap CLD-1450 from UK.
This unit is in a terrible cosmetic state: scratches all around and no feet, very dirty in the inside but fully working.
I thought this model could be used to run LD games on my MSX, as it is capable to play both NTSC and PAL discs but, my MSX is PAL, so it goes nuts when genlocking NTSC video.
This player does not have the I/O connector on it, so it lacks a signal that tells the MSX when a command is accepted/finished, so
I only managed to send basic commands, but more or less I can control it from the MSX.
I was not able to fully run games from, but I am wondering a way to do it. I already designed a simple circuit to interface to it and make it accept basic commands with no error messages (I have to test it yet).
I hope this introduction was not too boring to you
.
Cheers,
Ivan
