Post subject: Never had Laserdisc as a kid, but neighbor was obsessed. Posted: 04 Jul 2012, 04:16 |

Delaware native here. Growing up my neighbor was obsessed with laserdiscs. I was friends with their kids and I remember when they first got LDs. The dad popped in a widescreen Coneheads LD. They must of had a high end player because he paused and replayed the fireworks scene at least ten times in slow motion (I can't find a CAV version of the movie).
Anyways, Star Wars: The Definitive Collection initially inspired me to search out an LD player. Star Wars isn't my favorite movie nor my first LD purchase. I made sure my first LDs were Lost in Space, Hackers, and Fifth Element. I've had Lost in Space and The Fifth Element sitting around for a couple weeks still in its unopened original shrink wrapping before I got my LD player.
I know a few collectors gasp when you open a factory sealed LD. My bad. To me movies are meant to be watched, and I enjoy watching my favorite movies in every format possible (over and over again). For instance, different versions of That Thing You Do exists on VHS, DVD, and LD. I believe the LD and VHS contain more scenes than the DVD. I love that corny movie

Welcome to the forum! churnopol wrote: I know a few collectors gasp when you open a factory sealed LD. My bad. To me movies are meant to be watched... You hit the nail on the head. I've debated on whether I should open some sealed collectable items I've gathered but in the end they were meant to be enjoyed and not stuck in a box or wrapper waiting to be enjoyed by someone else further along the line.

Is that why there so many sealed ones on eBay for sale at the moment. The moment I get a wrapped one I rip that shrink wrap off and smell the Laserdisc it has smell you know! Oh the sweet smell of Laserdisc in the morning post. Welcome aboard churnopol. neighbour below is going bonkers because a car horn alarm down the road won't stop, and he's yelling out "shut-up!!!" Its the 2012 curse! Hello laserbite34, I had thought of mentioning this before, but I didn't, for fear that everyone here who didn't already would think that I was totally insane! You are absolutely correct, my friend! There's nothing quite like the smell of a freshly popped cherry laserdisc! Damn, that's a beautiful smell! It does my heart good to hear you mention that! Now I know that there are indeed others out there like me who enjoy the finer things life has to offer! Keep the faith, David

Personally I think its the plastic bags they use on discs. I noticed this, years ago when buying Laserdisc that the plastic bag has an okay smell, of course over time it will fade a little bit. My newest sealed one in plastic bag was Unlawful Entry, no I wasn’t sniffing because Madeleine Stowe was inside it. LILTS Laserdiscs I like to Sniff. The paper/plastic bag ones don't smell too strong. Take a bluray even that has smell the smell of "blu" smells like that plasticine that I used to play with at school? DVD cases have smell but not one that sticks out like "blu". I have some HD-DVD that I brought this, year and its a little hard to tell as it came from an owner that likes Old Spice no doubt? There is sealed Mummy Returns so when I get around to...Noooooo. You mustn't open the wrapping! Well I'll see if it has HD-DVD red smell?

i have some discs that have been opened for years but still have that smell. especially Japan discs. Well the only Japanese Laserdisc I have is STAR WARS episode 1 The Phantom Sniffer I just took a good sniff of it and its slightly wearing off a bit now. Its mostly the cardboard sleeving.
