Post subject: New to LazerDisc Database and have Lazerdiscs to Sell

Hello Everyone. I am just about as new to the world of lazerdiscs as one gets but I recently purchased a collection of between 500-600 laserdiscs at an estate sale of a deceased doctor. The collection is primarily Opera/Classical/Ballet performances from the Metropolitan Opera, Teatro Alla Scala, Weiner Philharmoniker, etc. There is also a smaller percentage of discs that are from asia that appear to be for karaoke, some movies, some art accompanied by classical music etc.
After spending a few days inventorying and checking the estimated value of lazerdiscs I found them to differ in value greatly from just a few dollars to as much as $99.00 each.

My intention is to sell the entire collection but not sure which is the best way to go about it. Ebay Store? Website?
Any help in how to market or if you are interest in purchasing some let me know.
Thanks, Bill

hi bill,
what do you have?
discs do go for 1 dollar upto 500+
but it all depends on condition of the sleeve and playability.

do you have a player to test the discs?

Thanks for the response. Probably 95% of the discs are in those plastic sleeves and appear to be in excellent shape. Seems the guy was pretty serious protecting them and about the arts in general. I'm still in the process of separating the different genders but am noticing that he had whole collections. I have already found 15 discs from Herbert Von Karajan as an example. We have a lazerdisc player somewhere around but I haven't played any yet.

Hate to say it, but from what I've seen lately of the classical material is that it's hard to move. Asking and what you actually get are two different animals. Might not be worth the time and effort on Ebay except for the titles that you see have actually sold recently for $10 and up. If no data on Ebay can check LDDB to see if a title ever sold. My guess is that you may have 50 titles out of that 500 that are worth selling on Ebay. If you can group logically and sell in lot that might help move the titles not worth much. Good luck.

Reason for checking on laserdisc player is to check for rot. Just because the disc looks fine doesn't mean there isn't any rot.

I will definitely check them for rot. Are there any specific conditions that lead to rot or is it a manufacturer problem. Also, how accurate are the prices in the LaserDisc Database? I noticed that the prices are fairly close to those I'm seeing on the items for sale here in the shops. Are those prices a fair representation of their current value?

Time is the worst enemy for rot on LD's, some manufatcturer's are definitely more susceptible than others. Many posts more informative than I could give on here concerning rot.
As far as prices, LDDB database is not a very good indicator of price but at least another reference point to work with.
There is no rule on value for LD's, just what someone's willing to pay. Guess you'll have to weigh your time and how long your willing to sell for, against price and buyer interest. No rules here, this market moves all over the place from what I've seen.

Try offering a whole lot on a most popular local selling site on internet, to be picked up at your place as well. There are dedicated LD and classical music lovers everywhere in developed countries (quality match factor), I'm one of them but I'm in Switzerland. You might be lucky and sell them localy.
