My interest in laserdiscs actually started from a YouTube conversation mocking them.
Nice! I can picture it:
"Laserdiscs are lame. Just look at them. Wait, that giant disc is pretty cool. And the artwork is gorgeous. Never mind, I am a fan now."
More or less.
I've noticed they are the subject of mockery but only to those who aren't truly educated as to what they are.

MUSE isn't even close to worth the money, just so you know, unless you are a hardcore vintage videophile. Neither are most of the "rarer titles". Scarcity and cost have little to do with quality. Most of the best LDs are common as dirt and worth less than $20 (if not $1) whereas the majority of the expensive ones are disposable Hollywood garbage from the late 90s that most people have forgotten. Don't believe the hype.
There are *some* LDs that are both expensive and good, but most of the more hyped ones seem to be stuff like Ransom (DTS) and MI:2. There is no reason to start there or even end up there.
It's mainly for collection purposes. I know it isn't necessary or practical but it's something I'd like to do anyway. I have noticed that most titles are dirt cheap though like you said. I paid a total of about $15 for the 8 titles I currently have in my possession.
