Hello,
I joined LDDb.com about three weeks ago so I figured I should introduce myself. All of this started after I picked up a Marantz LV520 off eBay. The main reason for this was so that I could watch the unaltered versions of the original Star Wars Trilogy. I have the DVDs that have the theatrical cut as extras but I was underwhelmed with them to say the least. I have been into AV ever since my senior year in high school when I bought a Dual 502 turntable, Concept receiver, and a pair of Bose 601 speakers with money that I had saved up from any job I could find. I sure wish I had that stuff now but It served me well through my college days until they eventually all died off. When LaserDiscs were in their heyday I had small children and the players and media were way above my pay grade. By the time I got back into AV the home theater and DVD had been born and I have had several incarnations over the last ten years. You can see my most recent rooms by clicking on the link in my signature.
Back to LD, as I stated all this LaserDisc stuff started because I heard that I could get the original Star Wars on LD with decent PQ and much better AQ, by the way yes to both. Of course I didn't stop there, I found out that if I wanted to use the AC-3 output I needed a demodulator, done. If I wanted to hear DTS 5.1 I needed a different player since the LV520 does not have digital out, done in the form of a Panasonic LX-1000U. Well I can't just watch Star Wars, even if Han always shoots first, done, http://www.lddb.com/collection.php?action=list&user=bguzman. So far I'm having a blast watching and hearing movies as they were originally shown. But don't think I'm . I popped in Oblivion last night and for shear awesomeness nothing beats a well crafted BD in my HT. And I can't wait for the new Star Trek preorder to arrive.

I'm really enjoying collecting LDs. I am lucky enough to have a used record store in town that has a pretty good supply. Yesterday the wife and I went on an excursion, mainly for her to go shopping, and I located a used record store in Sacramento that sells LDs for $1 or $2 if they are sealed. Needless to say I was like a kid in a candy store but I was able to get out of there only $20 lighter. I buy most of my gear used or "open box" so I don't mind rummaging. In fact I quite enjoy it. Now if I could just find an XBR960 that somebody doesn't want I would be a happy boy. 8-)

Since I am combing my way though used LaserDiscs anyway are there any that I should be looking out for? Best picture and/or sound suggestions would be most appreciated.

I also got back into the format mainly because of my 3 and 1 year old. There is so much great kid stuff on LD. I also love the sound quality, and the affordability. I bought a big LD collection, and I am still gong through as I have time, selling some and keeping some.

After using the receiver/ demodulator list on this site, to demodulate my AC-3 I upgraded from a 1993 kenwood receiver to a Used Yamaha circa 2000 RX-V1. I have to say, best $$$ I ever spent on my home theater.

Enjoy that audio & welcome to the site!

Hello all in LD land,

I have added a Pioneer CLD-D703 to my ever growing LD player collection. Should be here next week for some serious testing.
