I am an old geezer - 61. The only really big advantage that I see to being old is that I am pretty close to retirement - Mrs. Bear and I will be working through April and in May we will be in retirement - so just a bit over six months. We bought our first player - a Pioneer LD-660 (my how times have changed - but at that time it was the only reasonably priced player on the market) in 1982 and we haven't looked back. Over the years we have accumulated a pretty large collection - including a lot of hard to find titles. |

Good morning bifrostbear, Good to read from you and welcome to the forum. Nothing wrong with your age sir and no doubt there is much, to be gained from you and your Wifes many life experiences. These cannot be contained in words alone, and so I for one can appreciate where you are coming from. Never underestimate all that you have to share, because they are gems from the passage of time. Kindest Regards to you both |

Another member of the over-60s club here - I think this may be a hobby with a lot of older people. |

I think one thing that older people appreciate in a way that younger ones don't is that we grew up when all you could do was watch movies on tv (usually only 4 channels in big cities - less in the outlying areas) - and in black and white only - or going to the theater. So for us the ability to have movies in your house that you can play at will is pretty awesome in comparison. I think I caught the laser bug since they were so much better than video tape - while I like dvds (and have a whole slew of them) the difference in quality change from laser to dvd was nowhere near as impressive as that from vhs to laser. Of course there is no reason that you can't have the best of both worlds - if you can have both they compliment each other pretty well. |

Good morning bifrostbear, ffutures & Firehorse, I have just turned 50 years young and so I am not far behind. The one thing I noticed when I going to Laserdisc Shops (in particular the Independents shops,) was the fact that it was much more of a personal experience. One would arrive at the shop, was greeted and had a good chat with the owner, who would offer cups of tea and coffee. Most customers were different in a good way, and I used to have a chat with customers who arrived whilst I was there. With Laserdisc it was personal: Each title, or Item of hardware that I purchased was more than a personal experience that left a lasting impression. Today the one retail outlet in the UK that I feel gives a very similar personal service is ''JOHN LEWIS'' this company is rather personal because the Staff are not just workers but, are part owners of the Company, to the degree that they receive bonuses every year. Other Independent Stores are also good however the above mentioned will match others with a smile and in most case will beat any price and offer a 5 years Guarantee. Kind Regards to all |
