My name's Sean. I just got into collecting Laserdiscs a couple months ago. I guess I was intrigued by the idea of watching movies in an analogue format with a more film-like quality to them. Pretty quickly I was able to track down a good condition DVL-700. I got it for $120, along with about 40 movies. It doesn't have the remote, but it works really well. Picture-wise, I have a non-HD DLP projector I got on Ebay, aimed at an old 60 inch home movie screen from the 1960s. It looks amazing! I was stunned. At first, I'd worried I'd just sunk all this money into a dead format, but there really is a difference. It's not quite as sharp as a newer format, but it just has this old film-like quality. It's like going to a movie theater a few decades ago. Very cool for a nostalgia-minded person like myself. As far as the sound, I'm just using an old pair of computer speakers at the moment, but the store I bought the player at also had a Marantz receiver from the 90's that has inputs for AC3, so once I get the right speakers and a little more room, I'll be all set. Anyway, I'm really excited to see that there's a whole community of people out there who appreciate this stuff. The rest of the world is really missing out. One last thing: I think if I could track down any Laserdisc, it would be a copy of the Hillcrane release of Transformers: The Movie. It's one of my favorite movies and I can't imagine how amazing it would be to see it in this format. It's rather hard to find, though, I can see... |

I think that's the one often show up for $1200. One dude did a $1 starting bid no reserve auction once. It ended around high $400 iirc. I dont know if this release have anything special about it other than being rare. |

ah, the Hillcrane LD of Transformers the Movie. what a great disc for some reason they had a small Japanese LD section and had that disc I never knew it even existed. I think it was around 50 bucks new, boy am I happy to own one before the start of the film. the picture quality is AMAZING, and now that I have my setup with TV and Projector I should do a review of that one ________________________________ the rein-o official signature:

welcome! I would love to have a copy of the transformers movie on BD even though its region B. that and the laserdisc releases are expensive as anything. I didn't know there was going to be a boxset (i suppose its out of print now anyway?) so I imported the Chinese 20th anniversary box. it is made of wood and comes with some nice things inside. I have to fumble trying to watch the discs since I'm not Chinese. Apparently there is another version of the box I have with english on it so I guess that could be fore Hong Kong or something ![]() I refuse to see the live action ones since they really seem stupid to me. I would love another cartoon movie. |

Whoa! What all is included in that box set there? It's huge! Also, I guess there are two editions of Transformers the movie on LD. The most recent one (also an import) only has mono sound and the audio on the theatrical trailer is badly out of sync. So, the Hillcrane disc seems way superior. I've read reviews that hype the stereo sound as being well worth it, and I have yet to see a DVD version of the film that got the colors really right. The reds are always bleeding over (Rhino release) or too pink (20th anniversary). So, Hillcrane is probably the best of all. |
