Just joined recently. Purchased my very first LD player, a Pioneer CLD-D502 off a local guy for $25. Never had a LD player before but was always fascinated by them (especially the artwork). I have a weird affection for dead formats, so I figured why not! Picked up a few LDs at a local swap shop and ordered some off ebay. Unfortunately ran into my first laser rot disc, it was a still sealed copy of Prom Night 3. I guess I should avoid buying any laser disc sealed! I knew to check for rot when I bought some locally but what can you do. Too bad as I was looking forward to seeing this movie in it's R rated form since the DVD only contains the TV edit (for some bizarre reason!).

I live in Southern Indiana and if there are others in this area, I would love to know of some shops to get some LDs from! I know of one in Louisville KY (Book & Music Exchange) but would like to know of more.

Thanks!

Hi bgp,

Welcome to the forum! Sorry to hear of your bad fortune with Prom Night 3. I have a copy of it that I bought new, probably in the late 80's or early 90's, whenever it came out. As far as I know, my copy plays perfectly. I'll have to pull it and check it, as I haven't watched it for a long time. It's a 3M pressing, and you have to be careful of their discs from 1988-89. They had a problem which seems to have been unique to that plant. I have been told it had something to do with the glue they were using at the time to fasten the two halves of the discs together. It caused a deterioration of the reflective layer, and it can be seen with the naked eye, as small spots underneath the clear plastic layer of the disc. I bet if you look at the disc you have, you will see something that looks like that below the surface. I will also wager that the date on the disc is either 1988 or 1989. Pretty much everything else from 3M is very reliable, but you really have to look out for those years. Fortunately, it's easy to spot once you know what to look for. I will certainly have to check out the shop you named in Louisville sometime when I am there. I am located only about 70 miles away from there in Lexington. I don't get to Louisville very often, so I don't know any shops there to look for laserdiscs. The only places here in Lexington where they can be found to my knowledge are Pop's Resale on Leestown Road, and Half Price Books in Hamburg Pavilion. Not much selection at either one though, and certainly very little in the way of any rare titles to interest an advanced collector like myself. They are worth a look, however, if you're ever in the Lexington area, but don't expect to find anything really unusual. Anyway, welcome to the forum! You'll enjoy it here, and probably learn a lot in the process!

Best Regards,
David
