Howdy All,

Glad to be part of this community. Looks like there's a wealth of LaserDisc information here. I'm fairly new to the LD hobby, having only started collecting about a year ago. I love cinema and TV, especially pop culture related from the 80's and 90's. I have a youtube channel where I digitally archive and share commercials and rare TV shows from the 70's-90's. Most of my material comes from Beta tapes, but I have a small collection of videos from LD as well.

I have several LD's on order (JP pressings) which I'm pretty excited about. Also, I won an ebay auction yesterday for a Pioneer LD-S9! Can't wait to get that fine piece of machinery.

Well, thanks for reading and I look forward to reading threads and contributing. -Dave :)

Good morning Davesarchives,

Have just read your introductory post sir,

It's always a pleasure read of others experiences, joys and general fondness of this fine format.

I noticed that you have purchased an LD S9 a lovely player, and one that I would like to own at some stage.
was this the one on ebay that has been well looked after and that had also been more than refurbished, and more of a none standard refinement to the draw mechanism ect..........

I have noticed a good number of LD S9's on ebay of late, and the good thing is most of these and other high end models come from homes where they are well looked after, of which is a reassurance to those that are wanting to purchase them.

Let us know when the player arrives and if all is working well.

Kind regards to you and keep in touch

Thanks, benmbe! Yup, just bought it off ebay a couple days ago, but from a JP seller. Here's the listing info: http://www.ebay.com/itm/191439702426?_t ... EBIDX%3AIT

I'm not sure if this one has had anything done to it as far as maint. is concerned, but it looks pretty clean. I've had some really great experiences with electronics from Japanese sellers, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed! :)

I'll definitely post an update as soon as I get it in. I bought a tvONE Video to HDMI scaler as well yesterday (http://www.tvone.com/video-to-hdmi-scaler), and I hope it plays well with the S9. tvONE appears to make some really great commercial grade scaling equipment. -Dave

EDIT: ACKKK!!! I just looked at ebay and there's 2 new listings. One is 50 less than I paid and comes with a voltage converter. No worries, It is what it is.

I'm new here too--just getting started but have a good large HD DVD collection as well as VHS stuff I just could not toss out!

do people you know think something is wrong with you like they do me when you tell them "HEY I GOT A COOL LASERDISC PLAYER!!"???

ALSO--LOVE your new machine here. I used my STR DG1000 Sony receiver as my upscale--its more of a pass thru thing but there IS a noticeable difference when it sends the signal to my W1070 BenQ...

I was wondering if your upscale for video makes the LD a lot clearer or....

Hope to hear from you soon--Mark

Hehe, my wife absolutely hates it because they are big machines and the media is big as well. Other folks dont really understand it. I'll definitely post my findings once I have the scaler setup. To be honest, I'm not expecting great results, but I'm hoping they are much better than the results my modern receiver is giving me now.

I'll look forward to seeing the results--what kind of receiver do you have the set up hooked up to? I am looking for an CLD M---- with the five disc changer--that way my wife will think its for CDs as well as whatever the he** Mark is using it for...LOL. If its music: OK then. If its some experimental old school wasteoftimemoneyspace then I am ALWAYS in trouble... :silent:

Dave - saw your Pink Floyd cap off LD forever, nice work. Hope you enjoy the S9!

spaceglider8 - Given your luck, don't even try to get a M series mailed to you. They don't ship well at all. In fact you should probably keep an eye out for local deals as long as you've got one working player

space- I have a Pioneer SC-1222. Great receiver. Runs cool...like, all the time. Horrible at handling anything analog. I read somewhere that folks were using DVD players as pass throughs. Not sure how I could do that, but I do have an Oppo BDP-93 Blu Ray player...I wonder if that would work. Has excellent upscaling.

Happy - hey! Thanks for that. I'm counting the days until it arrives!

Good evening davesarchives, happycube & spaceglider8,

Just been reading your posts and replies guys and enjoyed each one,

hey Dave don't worry about the other LD-S9 auction being a little less expensive as we can all no doubt relate to this, through the many similar experiences we have encountered at times.

The main thing is that we all hope that you got a clean well looked after player, and so shall look forward to reading of this when you have received it and had a play.

The subject of playback through ones receiver, and LD storage is interesting.

1) Playback with a pass through has not been experienced by myself, but would like to try this through an OPPO 105D or similar that offer this function.

2) Laserdisc Storage is not a problem for myself personally, as they are all stored correctly in an area of my home that doesn't effect, or should I say could not be used for anything else.........of which I am grateful for.

Kind regards Guys.......Take care of yourselves

Thanks, Benmbe. I'm hoping it gets here safely. Considering it's 15 lbs less than my CLD 97, I'm not too concerned. :)

Hello davesarchives,

It's interesting how each item of hardware has it's own personal story.

What I mean by the above is this, each item on a personal experience with how each item of equipment was purchased and how long it took to purchase.........

Example of this is my own personal purchase of the CLD-97 that took 18 months, from negotiations, shipping and paying by the many deposits before receiving.........brand new and sealed..........received opened played perfectly and a joy to own.

Every other item of equipment came along with similar challenges.

LD order of mine has been with the seller for 5+ Years, of which I am now paying further installments each month, and this should take another 4 to 5 months........titles include: MI 2 8/10 / NEW SEALED SIXTH DAY / THE BEACH SEALED / SONG OF THE SOUTH SEALED & 8/10 / JAMES COBURN MAN LIKE FLINT & IN LIKE FLINT NEW sealed / and around 17 others..........when I finally get these it will be with a deep sense of appreciation and joy to hold, let alone play them

To read of others purchases is a joy equally shared with oneself........

Kind Regards

Thanks for all the tips and ideas everyone--its been fun trying this and that and taking a gamble on my Sony 605's..I sure wish I had found THIS place BEFORE getting in on the bids I did on eBay however--it would have saved a hundred bucks or so on the lemons I ended up having..

On the other side of that, however, is when I took apart that first MDP 605 and started learning how to fix this and that, or at the very least looking at the mechanisms..getting on youtube and learning how the things worked...how they break..all of it--it was like getting your first car back as a 16 year old and looking under the hood and appreciating all the design and work and artistry that went into not only the machine..but then the discs themselves. When I open a DVD or Blu-Ray, I don't get that feeling...the Sony 3D player I have now is a small box the size of a large box of Hot Tamales, has all the functions on the screen--no real buttons or lights--and, well, its boring.

When the LD players came it was like there was something REAL..something BIG..something to look at, ponder, repair, mess with. Maybe it's a guy thing 'cause my wife and daughters sure don't "get it"--but my son does... :)

Then I took out the Star Wars trilogy out of their wrappers...out of the bubble wrap and opened up that longplay 33rpm style cardboard case fold out and my son and I just...looked at it..wow...this is REALLY COOL but not because it was old, had the original poster pictures on it...but because it was something that was "original"--not tampered or "improved" on but just--was as it was supposed to have been back in the day...when I was 10 years old and had just visited the theater and now had visions of sugar plums with Darth Vader helmets on them dancing in my heart and head...

I think I might be a bit of a nerd, or maybe a romantic..but I've always liked movies and collecting--but this, this is something that's a bit different for me. I can't explain it just yet. Very, very fun..cool...a challenge...a hobby, a passion.

I know exactly how you feel. I get the same feeling when I have a new LD shipped in and opening it for the first time. When I was a kid, my family could never afford such expensive items. At the time, $20-$50 was a ton of money to spend on a movie. Now we can buy them in almost new condition for half the price, yet still be able to enjoy the experience of handling an LD.
