| Post subject: | Hello! |
Hello there! I've been lurking around the LDDB site and these forums for a little while, and since I realized I have enough of a collection to manage with this site, I've decided to join up! I'm a girl, so I'll be one of the resident lady geeks on this board! I'm a relatively new laserdisc collector. I've known of them since at least 1998, when I discovered Japanese anime and VHS fansubs. I was too young to really buy any discs or participate in the fansubbing/tape-trading community of the time (I was 11 then, I'm nearly 28 now!) but I always thought LDs were a fascinating video format. They were certainly rare enough that I actually never saw an actual LD or LD player until 2012, when I started collecting. A local used game shop was selling an LD player for $40, and since it came at a time when I was heavily researching LDs and wondering if I should start collecting, I went ahead and bought it. Since then, I have close to 50 discs - all anime - with more to come! I got into LDs because of my obsession with anime, especially the mecha and magical girl anime of the 80s up till the late 90s/early 00s. I like giant robots, cute and colorful characters, and nice hand-drawn animation, so a lot of anime on LD fit the bill! The packaging is beautiful, so much more so than the DVD and Blu-ray box sets out now. Also, at this point, there are so many box sets and series that are so much cheaper on LD than on DVD and Blu-ray (especially Japanese releases, with DVD/BD prices out of the stratosphere!) so if there's an older show I can't afford on DVD/BD, I'll get it on laserdisc for 1/50 of the original price! And the lack of subtitles don't bother me one bit - I'm used to watching old anime raw because no one will care to fansub them. And I get to learn more Japanese that way! Finally, since I'm still new to the format, I'll probably ask a ton of questions, so please be patient with me. I'm always learning new things, so I'm sure it'll all make sense sooner or later! Thanks! |

Good evening Mayari, Good to read from you and thank you for taking the plunge and sharing with us all here. Please don't worry about asking questions, as the way I look at life (as well as I am sure the many others no doubt is) if you don't ask you'll never find out. Kind Regards to you and shall look forward to corresponding with your good self at some stage. Take care |
