Howdy all, Since it seems the protocol, I'll introduce myself here. I'm fairly new to LaserDisc, having purchased a CLD-D5014 from a flea market some years ago, but until I bought a Micomsoft XRGB-3 upscan converter I never really put it to use. Now, I'm enjoying a deeper plunge into this culture, history and technology. Just yesterday I picked up 4 sealed RKO Classics Collection and two mint Criterion Collection LDs for $2.99 each at Half-Price Books. And I'm quite pleaed to see that our very own seller Mediaphile/clvlander is from Houston as well. Watching the Criterion copy of Pygmalion I got, I'm (as I had hoped from my reading) pleased with the quality for 4:3 black and white content. I'm also curious about open-matte copies of films. |

Welcome! How is the XRGB-3? I've got the Mini and don't seem to get any good results with any of my LD players using it. |

I've not really had a chance to try it with anything but composite out from a console yet; I suppose I could try it with a Gamecube's component out. However, even on composite out, the many Saturn games I've tried on it look very nice. I haven't really experimented too much with it as I'm waiting until I get around to ordering RGB (SCART style) cables for MSX, Genesis/Saturn, PS1/PS2, and SNES, so hopefully that's when I'll see it shine. However, with LD content, I've not been entirely pleased with the results, though it looks acceptable. I've especially noticed aliasing on diagonals. I am using the S-Video out from the CLD-D5014, and I recall that there is some sort of argument for using composite out instead. Again, I just started out with this setup so I haven't experimented with it too much. I've also got a Fosgate DSL-One surround processor that I could throw in there, but it was a little noisy the last time I tried it so I'm straight stereo for now. |

Are you sure it's an CLD-D5014? I've never heard of that model. Though CLD-D501 and 504 do exist for sure. I'd recommend using the composite output on your LD player as the comb filter is most likely very old. The only console I've tried on my Mini with composite was an unmodded Nes, and it looked like crap though better than with my DVDO Edge. Nes RGB looks a lot better. I highly recommend using RGB for the Mega Drive and Saturn as they've got very sharp signals. Composite is rather decent on the Saturn (kind of like the Snes), but very poor on the Mega Drive. Does the XRGB-3 even have proper deinterlacing for 480i-signals? I know it can emulate the phosphor look of a CRT (sharp yet somewhat flickery) which reduces input lag greatly and has a nice characteristic look. The Mini has both linear and motion adaptive deinterlacing. Motion adaptive is excellent for graphics and really comes in handy if you play many games from the sixth generation (especially PAL as they're rarely progressive) but doesn't look good for LD at all. It doesn't have 3:2 pulldow, ruining it for film viewing. A/D conversion is also poor for video on the Mini. Picture gets very smooth with smeary colors and lacking textures. Processing is overall optimized for graphics and bringing nearly every retro game console to a whole new level on a plasma or LCD display. The XRGB-3 should shine as well. |

I'm not sure about the deinterlacing on the XRGB-3, I think I read somewhere it does line doubling instead of proper deinterlacing, but I haven't done enough research to speak authoritatively. Fudoh's Micomsoft page seems like a good resource, and I read it before purchasing the 3, but I wasn't reading it with an eye to playing interlaced films. I haven't noticed any mice teeth or other obvious (de)interlacing artifacts at least. I got one of the XRGB-3s flashed with an English firmware, so at least I can understand the menus without an aid. It appears to be a D504, yeah. I wish I had the remote. Thanks, the comb filter, that's what I was thinking of. I'll give composite a try now. ![]() edit: The composite, at least just flipping between the two, looks worse. It looks a lot less sharp. Took a picture of a freeze frame from a CAV disc, first is composite, second is S-video: ![]() ![]() I haven't changed any settings on the XRGB, so it might be addressable on that end. |
