Post subject:  New-ish collector from the Biggest Little City in the World!

Hello! I'm Sean, from Reno, NV. I'm a part-time EMT/part time stocker at Sears. I'm hoping to change this to just full-time EMT soon. LaserDisc collecting is a fairly new hobby of mine. I also collect vinyl records and video games, I play guitar, and a bit of mandolin and ukulele, and I like electronics repair.

I'm 21, so I'm a bit young to actually remember LaserDisc in its prime (I grew up on VHS; my family didn't even own a DVD player until 2004), but I've been interested in them since I was young. I've always had a love for vintage technology, in fact; I started collecting records around age ten and got into electronics repair not long after, though I'm far from an expert in that field! That, and I've also had a special interest in home video formats, and I remember spending many hours in my early teens reading everything I could find online on early LaserDisc players, CED, VHD, even Video 2000! (I actually had a CED copy of "Time Bandits" at one point, but I don't know what became of it, sadly. Never had a player anyway, though.)

Anyway, I got my first LD player from my uncle around age 13 -- a Pioneer LD-V2200 that was part of an interactive museum exhibit that was being updated -- but unfortunately never had the space or funds to pursue collecting, so I ended up selling it. I found a Pioneer CLD-59 at Goodwill for $8 in December, however, and some discs at another thrift store later. The CLD-59 had a slipping belt, which I finally got around to fixing, but other than that works flawlessly, so I've been bitten by the LaserDisc bug once again. This time, though, since I have some actual income and space to set up a player, I can now pursue collecting a little more earnestly.

My collection is fairly small right now, but I've had a handful of eBay wins arriving, and it seems like my interest grows with each new one I get. My collection's kind of eclectic and is primarily what I've found at thrift stores recently or cheaply on eBay. I do also own a few DiscoVision titles, which I find especially interesting, partly because of how relatively little info there seems to be on them compared to more modern incarnations of the format. Since I find home video fascinating as it is, being able to investigate these early examples of it firsthand is highly enjoyable to me. Almost like electronic archaeology in a sense.

One of my current goals is to collect all The Beatles' movies -- they've been my favorite band for many years and why I started collecting vinyl. Part of why I decided to jump into LaserDisc is because I won "The Beatles Anthology" box set fairly cheaply. Though I'd seen the entire thing several times, I never actually owned it until then, and the LP-sized artwork and shockingly low price are what sold me on the LD version over DVD/VHS. It got me thinking about what else I could find on the format. "Let It Be" is going to be a challenge, though, and has been on my general Beatles collection wishlist for years as it is. Between the relatively high asking price and the high disc rot rate, I'm not sure when it'll happen. I'd also like to try to collect all the DiscoVision titles that have caught my interest. After that, who knows!

I've already contributed a little bit of info based on what I own to a few of the LDDB pages, and I hope to contribute more information as I acquire it. Should be a lot of fun, and I look forward to expanding my collection and my knowledge!

Cheers!

The forum is a great place for learning. You'll have to decide who knows their stuff. Some on here definitely know their stuff, other just think they do! I have been helped numerous times by various people. One of the best - disclord - unfortunately is no longer with us but his posts are still here and the knowledge he imparted to us. Welcome to the hobby! It's great fun!

Thanks for the welcome, everyone! I've had a busy few weeks so I haven't been able to get online much, but I've added some more to my collection and plan to do some research on what I've picked up! Look forward to being a little more active.
