| Post subject: | Hello! |
Hi all! I'm in the UK. I always thought Laserdiscs were pretty cool, and after a false start a number of years ago (buying a "spares or repair" thing on eBay that looked reasonably easily fixable as it just sounded like a PSU problem, but turned up with not only that problem but also half the mechanisms completely shattered... never did find out if the seller was trying it on or if it was damaged in transit!), I now do have a working Pioneer CLD-D925, which (given I'm no videophile) seems like a pretty reasonable player to me, at least in terms of functionality and flexibility, along with a load of discs (I already had Good Will Hunting, which I have entirely because it was the cheapest PAL disc on eBay at the time when I bought that first, broken player!). Given the historical context of Laserdiscs, I was pretty impressed by the picture quality I've seen so far. Certainly on par with very good quality analogue broadcast TV, which I suppose is what I should have been expecting! I'm a big Star Trek fan so before too long I'll probably be looking at what Star Trek Laserdiscs are available at a reasonable price. I'm also intrigued by just how long Laserdiscs seem to have been made for; I find it amazing that many of the films I grew up with (I'm only 21) were released on Laserdisc, when I absolutely did not even hear of Laserdiscs until MUCH later. I suppose it maintained quite a strong niche as the enthusiasts' format until DVD broke through and took over that role. So yeah, I'll probably pick up some of those too, for the strange combination of nostalgia and novelty! I also recently found at a car boot sale a CED Videodisc copy of some of the Tom and Jerry shorts. Reading about it, very intriguing format; makes me wish I had a player for that Any tips on things I should be doing with my player, general tips about looking for Laserdiscs (I've only read up a little; I know about things like disc rot, but I'm sure there are plenty of things I'm not aware of!), etc. would be much appreciated! |

Hi, you will get all the help & advice that you may require here, many friendly & helpful people use the site. Your CLD-D925 player is a good one, overall it does everything very well & I have had a few players over the years including some of the so called "high-end" ELITE units etcetera but I do end up using the 925 most of the time - that's only my opinion though. For a number of reasons I love the LD format, hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Have fun |

Good day muzer, I have just read your intro sir A fine warm welcome to this forum and thank you for your contribution here. I am also from the UK and to be honest I miss the days when Laserdisc's were to be found through mostly the independant retailers, who were importing them from the US & Japan. There are many reasons that I could share here, but have already expressed these on many occasions. Suffice to mention that I share even to this day the same joy that you yourself have of this fine format I am still collecting Laserdisc's and still find this a joy with each purchase. I look forward to further reading of your enthusiasm, and so thank you for sharing with us all here Kind Regards to you |

Cheers for the welcomes! I'm not sure how active I'll become, as I'm not sure how many discs I can really justify buying right now! But I'll try to stick around. I've now updated my current collection and made it public: http://www.lddb.com/collection.php?acti ... sort=title . I was surprised to find that two of them are American NTSC copies, imported by an import shop it seems since they have BBFC rating stickers on the covers and discs; though I don't think I should have been that surprised, given I bought a dual-standard player! I haven't yet watched all of them, but from what I have seen, everything appears to be in working order! |

Welcome fellow Trek Fan! If you ever get the chance you should check out the Japanese Star Trek Box sets, these really are nice. I see some crazy prices on ebay, if you decided to go after them your best bet short of knowing someone in Japan would be to use a proxy bidding service and buy them off Yahoo Japan auctions. If you're patient full sets come up and can be very cheap, just the shipping is a bit steep due to the weight of them. All of Original Series and TNG is available though only seasons 1-5 of DS9 and Voyager were released before they stopped making LD's. Voyager was never released in the US and only seasons 1-3 of DS9. |
