Post subject:  I suppose I'll introduce myself as well, then!

Hi there!

I'm Knoeki. 25 years old, from the Netherlands.

Always been kind of a fan of older tech. I've got a whole bunch of older computers/consoles (C64, Amiga, NES, and so on and on). I didn't find out about laserdisc until the mid-2000s, I think, but never really got into then. So many hobbies, so little money.

A couple years ago though, I went to a thriftshop to look through the bins of vinyl. Found a bin with LaserDiscs, and I was intrigued. Of course they were all asian (from hong kong, I think?) so the only thing I picked out was a Doraemon disc, since that was the only thing I really recognized, and I didn't have a player yet anyway.

About 2 weeks ago, it started itching. I had that disc for so long now, I figured I may as well start looking around for a player. After a bit of searching I found one for sale near me for 25 euro, and I went to pick it up last wednesday. Boy was that heavy to carry back home! ^^;;

Sadly, I found out the hard way that not all players will eat both PAL and NTSC discs, and of course mine only does PAL/Analog discs (which seem to almost not exist ._.) - I went ahead and bought a couple of PAL discs to see if they'll work or not.

I'm not really critical of quality. I just like the physical format. It's substantial. It weighs something. It doesn't feel cheap like CDs/DVDs do. But then, I'm also the same weirdo that likes the aesthetics of VHS and it's typical distortion, although that's what I grew up with, so part of it may be nostalgia ^^;

It's gonna be fun to build up a physical collection of movies and stuff. As for the kind of discs I wanna collect, I don't really know yet. Some movies that I like, of course, but other than that, just anything a bit more oddball and obscure seems neat to have, like demo/display kind of discs. Also, I guess some anime would be cool to have. I doubt much out there has english subtitles, but it'll still be cool to have and watch. Maybe I can even use some Amiga/Genlock magic to superimpose subtitles on stuff in real time... and I even found one of my all-time favorite anime, Serial Experiments Lain, came out on Laserdisc! Though it's probably super rare .__.;

So, I'm still out to look for a PAL/NTSC player and some discs to watch, but hey, it's the start of something beautiful, isn't it? ^^

Welcome aboard! :)

From what I can see the Serial Experiments Lain LDs pop up frequently on Yahoo Auctions. Not as cheap as other anime probably but certainly not difficult to find. The third volume also had a box set, which was big enough for fit all five discs.

I didn't know about yahoo auctions! I'll have a peek over there sometime, then! ^^ thanks for the heads up! :3

EDIT: I have to say, it's a bit confusing, with everything being in japanese... any tips on how to look around for stuff better? ^^;;

Learn Japanese. ;)
You can search for "Lain LD" and find the Serial Experiments Lain volumes that are for sale currently.

Oh yeah, of course! ^^ I just meant some general searching/browsing tips ^^

and do you have any idea if there's a way to see the shipping costs to europe? or what it generally is?

would you recommend buying a player on there? seems like they're not super expensive on there, but I don't know...

Non of the sellers ship internationally, but you can use an auction agent to buy pretty much anything from there. Keep in mind though that you have to pay for shipping within Japan plus international shipping and auction agent fees but if you can find a lot with all volumes in one single auction it may turn out as a great deal. Even when buying multiple LDs from separate sellers on Yahoo it's usually the cheapest alternative for these kinds of pressings.

If you're looking for a high-end player (i.e. HLD-X9 or X0) there are great deals now and then on Yahoo auctions, but for a newcomer I'd say you should look for local deals. I got my BVM from Yahoo earlier this year and although shipping from Japan is very risky at this weight it was totally worth it.

Ah, okay. I see. How do I find an auction agent? Or how does that work? ^^ sorry, very new to all this. Thanks so much for your patience <3

There are some agents to choose from. I've done business through Jigsco and Japan-Auction-Agency. Never had a problem with either of them. You basically tell them what you want to buy or place a bid on, they do it for you and once you've bought everything you want they'll send it to you.

Cool, I was already looking at Buyee actually! Seems all pretty reasonable, I might actually go with that.

First order of business is an LD player that can do something else than just PAL/Analog discs though! ^^;

A Pal/Ntsc player, you might also find on ebay.co.uk or even ebay.nl marktplaats.nl for local pickup in your country.
See this for example.
Almost everything from Pioneer beginning with CLD and Pal/Ntsc logo will do the job.
I had a Pioneer CLD D925 shipped from the UK. And that shipping from the UK was very expensive.
So if you would find something on marktplaats.nl, tweedehands.nl or maybe even .be depending where you live and you'd have a car then you could try to just pick up stuff. The advantage with that that you also get to see the player yourself before buying.

Those expensive HD (HiVision) laserdisc is Japan only and only NTSC and or even only LD, no cd cdv capability. Purely for HD and fine NTSC discs playback.

Well, the player I have I picked up from marktplaats.nl ^^ I don't have a car though, so I'm limited to pickups close by. I do that anyway when it comes to marktplaats because they don't really have a feedback system... it was heavy to carry the one I bought home though ^^;

That pioneer one looks nice, but 200 euro is a lot of money >.<; is that a normal price for a player like that? I don't necessarily need anything super high end...

I've seen many reviews of the CLD D925, and I've had mine for just a few days (I'm obviously new to Laserdiscs too), but I basically gather that it's the best European Laserdisc player. I got mine for what I believed was a pretty reasonable price (£75 collection with remote and 20 LaserDisc titles) from eBay. Obviously being in the Netherlands will make that harder...

I did, however, collect it with public transport. It was hard but not impossible; the thing weighs about 7kg.

I've been using J-subculture. For the moment at least they're commission free; still a 4% transaction fee on all payments but many charge commission on top of a 3-4% transaction fee. So far so good; some shipping damage to one box set I ordered but there's always that risk with shipping.

I'm fine with searching through yahoo japan for now, I think. I really need to get myself a well priced PAL/NTSC player first I think ^^;

Greetings Knoeki,

Welcome to this forum, and it's a pleasure to have you on board with us all here.

I couldn't help but really relate to your fondness of this format and all that it offers.
I think you will find that most of us here have the same, or very similar connection with this format.

Like you mentioned it's not about the picture quality so much, but the many aspects of how it plays in the hardware, and the very tangibility of this format that makes it so very collectable that truly counts.

Happy collecting and please keep us all updated with your progress.

Kind Regards

:wave: :thumbup:

Welcome!

Hope you are here to stay!
I think you will have great benefit of using the forum regularly and you might find many interesting things. In my opinion, the people collecting laserdiscs have many things and interests in common. :)
