Hello all. I have been a keeping my collection organized here on the database for a few years and have enjoyed all the information posted on the site. Now that there is a forum I can only imagine how much more time I will spend here! Like you guys I love the laserdisc format.
My first recollection of these big shiny discs goes back to the 3rd grade when our class was shown several education films that were on LD. Even at that age I was fascinated with its capabilities. Chapter selection, slow motion, and digital still frames blew my VHS restricted mind. Anyway time went on and I forgot all about it. DVD came out and I thought it was the best thing in the world. As I got older I really started getting into AV as a hobby and and did alot of trading over ebay. This allowed for my next encounter with LD. Searching for movies one day I ran across a title that was on laserdisc. Laserdisc, i thought, that couldn't be what those big shiny discs were that we watched back in elementary school were they? Sure enough I had discovered a format I had forgotten all about. Living in an outlying area I don't ever remember any store carrying them back in the 90's.
Curiosity had gotten the best of me and I purchased my first player back in 2003. It was a Pioneer LD player that was also a 5 disc CD player. It broke after I had it for a couple of months but it came with some great movies. After that I purchased a Denon LA-2300. It was my first decent player and I loved it. I kept it for a couple of years but moved on to a Pioneer Elite CLD-79. I actually went through two of these. By this point I was in college and ended up selling both players and went without for a year or so. Then I found the magnum opus. My last purchase, and current player, a Faroudja LD1000. I plan on keeping this one for a good while.
Over the years of my laserdisc collecting I have acquired some really nice releases of some of my favorite movies. I honestly cannot ever see my self getting rid of them. A few years ago I also ran across a great deal on a Sony EP9ES (this is a processor with an AC-3 demodulator) new and still sealed in its box. Now even with owning blu rays I still occasionally find my self browsing through laserdiscs just too see if something catches my eye. This truly is a disease!
