Post subject:  Greetings from Michigan

Good day to you all. I am a bit of a veteran LD collector despite only being 27. I got into the format when I grabbed a CLD-1070 used when I was 10 (I was just looking for a CD player) at a swap meet. Still have the unit and it works pretty well despite some flutter. Didn't get into collecting the movies for a couple more years when I could get them cheap. I stopped after a while due to money issues, going through High School and college...and I recently got bit by the bug again to the dismay of my girlfriend of 8 years (partially because I have like 100 CEDs and 4 players in storage right now that I do not know what to do with atm). I am not much of an obsolete format collector.

I am mostly collecting movies that haven't had a DVD or Blu-ray release or have an expensive/poor DVD release (Fright Night Part II being notable). I don't collect DVDs aside from Anime and stuff I can't get on Blu-ray. I do also want to get original cuts of films on LD, namely Star Wars (But I am not interested in CAV too much).

I currently have a CLD-D702 player on the way which theoretically should be a decent upgrade from my barebones CLD-1070, The owner reported that the tray won't come out, so a belt replacement and lubing up the rails and it'll be spinning discs again.

My current project is decent low profile up scaling since the internal scaler in my TV is bad. I have some upscaler experience because of my background as a retro gamer. I also have a small collection of cheapo scalers which I am trying out. I figure the cheapo ones may work decently with LD since they are programmed to de-interlace before scaling, but then again, LDs do run at 425i rather than 480i.

Good morning from the UK

Greetings tgotr,

Welcome to the forum and good to have yourself here.

I have just read your introductory post and enjoyed what I read sir.

The purchase of movies that have not made it to DVD or Blu-Ray is also an interest of mine, and so find the laserdisc an excellent format to find these titles on.

Kind regards

Ah Benmbe, Thanks for the welcome. I am curious, do you collect NTSC laserdiscs with a PAL/NTSC player or are you PAL only? I know PAL territories got the shaft quite a lot when it came to games and laserdiscs. How common are PAL/NTSC machines in the UK?

Greetings Tgotr,

Most of my Laserdisc Players were imported from the US in their hey day Pioneer ELITES DVL 91 / 97 & 99.

NTSC is prefered by myself, although I do have 3 PAL / NTSC LD players purchased new.

I have an HLD X9 and have spare belts for most of the above ELITE players.

All are in great working order........... HLD X0 will be my last player to purchase I do not know when this will be achieved but that remains to be my hope.

Kind Regards

Hi tgotr

Benmbe I am sure will get back to you, he does appear to love the format & take his LD interest pretty seriously.

Here in the UK in the (very) early days we had PAL only LD players but it did not take long (mostly thanks to Pioneer) for dual PAL/NTSC players to be marketed in the UK & Europe although most European countries had very little (if any) marketing done. I would think it is safe to say that the vast majority of LD users here in the UK own dual PAL/NTSC players. The bulk of my LDs are NTSC with the PAL discs I own usually not available on the NTSC format - we had a rather poor history here with PAL discs as most were pressed by PDO at a rot factory in Blackburn but that is another story.

Does tgotr hold a record here perhaps?!?..... a first LaserDisc player at age 10 has got to be among the (if not the) earliest age acquisition into the format..... anyone younger?

Have fun & enjoy spinning the big shiny discs again  .

It was a yard sale acquisition, with no discs. Didn't get a movie till a while later. Saw it went with the Stereo system I was fixing (learning how to solder), at least stylistically and needed a CD player. I've made quite a bit of LD purchases at thrift stores by rummaging through their LPs.

There used to be a rental store 30 minutes from me that rented LDs, and for a while they were selling them off...eventually getting quite a bit for just a few bucks. I did have to buy Aliens CAV several times to piece together a Rot Free Set. I still have discs in the set that can rot, but to this day...rot free.
