First off I love the idea for this forum! LDDB has practically been my home page for the last 4 years and I think this is going to be a great way to form a community and make some new friends. I bought my first laserdisc player in 91 or 92 off a friend of mine who needed some quick cash. I started by renting discs since the price per movie was cost prohibitive to a college student. Then the Star Wars box was released and that was my first ever credit card purchase, (I'm probably still paying for that box). My collection was very small, (a few Disney box sets, a couple silent films, and a few of my 80's favorites), when I received a DVD player as a Christmas gift and packed up the player and discs that I had. Cut to 2007, recently single and broke, (funny how those two things go together), I'm browsing through Amoeba in Hollywood and find that the box sets and single discs that I drooled over are now cheaper to buy than renting a DVD. Soon I had the fever and was accepting players and discs from friends who were cleaning out their garages. I began researching the history of the format and became fascinated by it's short history which led to collecting and documenting the formats first couple years of releases. I know since then I have driven Julien crazy trying to update and keep track of early releases that were re-released multiple times with minor changes to the artwork or content, but to me these variations make collecting these shiny babies more fun than just watching the films. Hi Ron, I get to shop at Amoeba in Hollywood once a year when I'm there for the TCM classic movie festival. They are great and ship my box of laserdiscs back for me. Each time I check out with a stack of laserdiscs they are running around figuring out how to calculate shipping..... |
