Hi All, So I've done it...After watching countless videos about LD on YouTube from the likes of Techmoan and Culturedog, I finally succumbed. I'm based in the South East of England and at the ripe old age of 35, have grown up with the technology world rapidly evolving around me from birth. Unlike others though, I've found it hard to let got of my tech dreams. I've amassed a huge number of games consoles and computers over the years, some I was able to have when younger but mainly ones I've picked up since becoming old enough to spend my pocket money on what ever I want. Laserdisc is one of those unreachable things most middle class households didn't have when I was younger, I think my first memory was an early 90s trip to Oxford Street London and seeing what looked like "Films on Vinyl" in HMV, which under closer inspection turned out to NOT be soundtracks. This spiked an interest which has developed ever since. Well today, I got a player! Like the unreachable "Rolls Royce of games consoles" (The SNK NeoGeo), I now have the "Rolls Royce Of Movie Formats" (circa 1978-1998). I love films games and music, I even worked for Our Price which then became Virgin Megastores from the mid 90's till it's demise so this stuff is in my blood. I think as a Tarantino fan I most look forward to watching Pulp Fiction on LD as I feel the soft analogue picture will suit the film. Okay..okay..okay before I get ahead of myself I bought the player today..it's sitting right over there and I've got a couple of cheap discs on order to test if it even works yet! Bad Boys and Platoon. I wasn't sure what to get but I've paid £150 (the listing was for £300, seller took my best offer), for a Pioneer CLD 2850. It's not the greatest, but it's a starting point. I've got it hooked up to a Sony PVM 2054QM monitor and am outputting through an early 90s Sony stereo amplifier. Look forward to exploring the world of Laserdisc soon! (As long as the player works!) Tom ![]()

The CLD-2850 was one of my first players & I found it to be very reliable & it may have been among the first of the dual PAL/NTSC capable players (perhaps the first???) from Pioneer for the UK European market. I think it came with a 16:9 button on the remote for "squeezed" discs but my memory may be way off on that, about 10 to 12 years ago since I owned one so a high probability I am mistaken. Have fun |

Good evening Tomlee80, A big welcome to the LDDB forums Friend, Thank you for sharing with us all here, your love of retro tech equipment and analogue movie format/s. Yes' you are quite right in expressing that the Laserdisc was far from the reach of most peoples pockets, let alone when to young to even be in a position to purchase. I came into the Laserdisc enthusiasm late into the game in March of 1998 and worked damn hard to purchase the hardware and movies as quickly as possible, knowing full well then, that it's days were numbered, but did not allow this to distract myself from achieving my Laserdisc Software and hardware goals..... Well done to yourself I could relate to what you wrote............ Keep sharing Sir. It's a pleasure to have your enthusiasm, and I for one appreciate your introductory input here. Kindest Regards to you, |

You are not mistaken. It does indeed have one of those buttons and thanks for bringing it to my attention. I have the player hooked up to a 20in Sony PVM 4:3 monitor right now just because I feel it's the best output for most Laserdiscs but I'd be interested to see how a squeeze LD looks on my 40in Sony LCD in the living room.... |
