My name is Daron. I have known about Laserdisc for about 20 years, I recall seeing it on TV in "TOMORROW'S WORLD" (the 70s-late 80s BBC version of the GADGET SHOW in the UK). I remember hearing about the 'technically perfect pictures' and the 'trick frame facility' which Kieran Prenderville twiddled with whilst working the MAGNAVOX/PHILLIPS machine's button to flip a work-out video backwards and forwards, through its paces. As I was only about 11 at the time...the beauty of the system, or what it actually offered, either visually or sonically, did not really sink in. Fast forward just a few years to the early 80's and we have bought our first VHS recorder, an HITACHI VT-64E (I think?) it had a spring release top which sounded like a badly made jack-in-the-box, but was one of the first to offer soft-touch-panel type buttons. It sat there looking all impressive and very futuristic to my SF obsessed teen eyes. I had no real memory of LD anymore, by this time. In fact VHS became the heart of my 'Movie Set-Up' such as it was. But I saved hard, picked my individual components carefully and was doing OK. So...Flash forward through my SANYO 16:9 CRT, DVD, HD DVD (first 1080i and finally 1080p) and then finally Bluray. This is where I get the bug. Somewhere along the line I remember that I remember Laserdisc, and I start to investigate, and the more I do so...the more I realise that I missed out on something important. So after more investigation and homework, I bid on eBay for an 'entry-point' player. But I did not want any old one, I wanted DD5.1, NTSC/PAL, play-both-sides, Optical out, CX Noise Reduction, analogue out, S-Video capable...basically the works That's how I ended up with my lovely CLD-D925. An excellent machine for my needs...not the very best in the world but perfect for me. That was in the May of 2010...just 17 months ago! In the intervening time I have a stockpile of replacement + break-for-spares machines to service my current needs, two RF Demodulators (A Meridian 519 which I use and one Yamaha APD-1 which I keep as a spare) a good friend in Japan that ships Japanese titles to me on a regular basis, eBay, and a collection of close to 400 titles and most recently, THREE dedicated Laserdisc forums the latest of which is this LDDB one (which is more of a central hub/all-in-one centre for Laserdisc activities) It's a great time to be into Laserdiscs...I have just received and watched a fabulous ENCORE double bill of "Creature From The Black Lagoon" sequels and I have copies of the original and best "INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS" and Mel Brooks' "SILENT MOVIE" on their way to me in the mail as I speak... ![]() Whist my wife plays "Fatal Inertia HD" on the PS3, my DVL-909 sits resplendent in its champagne livery, looking all classy amongst my other AV components, as well as including a small lizard guarding my Meridian 519 and sub-woofer, and 3 small 1966 Batmobiles guarding the whole set-up. |

She'd never heard of them initially...but then I told her that her SUPERMAN IV, you know the one, Japanese LD is the longest version of the movie available anywhere (even the recent Blu mega set) she really began to see the point. Yes there are dedicated speakers that are just out of shot. If you are ever in the UK, you are most welcome. |
