Hello one and all!

I recently inherited my Uncle's LD collection. While my original thoughts were along the lines of "gee, thanks for the crap" after packing and shipping 16 70# boxes from California to Massachusetts, I see it now as a "labor of love".
I'm only 1/2 way through cataloging all the titles and it's amazing to me the variety he collected and how many he never played!
Curious about the rating system on the discs...
So sealed is a 10/10 correct?
What about discs with shrink wrap on them but opened? I gave them 8 ratings. Not sure if I should go back and update them?

Thank you in advance for any advice on rating as well as selling the discs.
Cheers,
Christa

Hello :)

You might want to check for disc rot.

A disc still be mangled and still in the shrink. Opened with the shrink still on the outside isn’t 8/10, it’s just an LD with some plastic on it.

In the LD world rot is more important than it being never touched by human hands.

Most LDs are worthless regardless so enjoy your uncles film collection for what it is.

That's correct.

Yeah, it’s 10/10 until some berk opens it and finds that crack running all the way through it indicating it been a 0 all along but nobody knew it. Or finds that it’s not even the correct movie since US style shrink wrap is extremely easy to reproduce. And when it comes to rot...

This site is its own enclave in terms of what you asked. If you just want to sell your stuff on eBay by all means keep it sealed and list with the usual caveats for sealed vintage media. If you're selling here thanks and good luck.

If you're going to check for rot use the Intro/Highlight feature on your player. Also examine for label detachment before inserting anything.

If selling is the goal absolutely leave them sealed. When buying I will ask if the seller would open, if not I'm not afraid to file a claim if the disc is cracked, done it before. I know some people think that's taboo.
