Had no idea there was a forum! Perhaps I should read the tabs more closely...
I first became aware of the mighty big shiny disc when I was a kid in the early 90's. I lived and breathed VHS, but would always ask what the big boxes and discs were for. Flash forward to a few years ago in college. I was in film school and get completely fed up with the way my favorite films were being treated on DVD/Blu-ray so I decided to finally take the LD plunge and try to do a digital transfer of a good LD.
And in the process of doing this, I completely fell in love with the old 12" shiny disc. The moment I got my first classic era James Bond disc, it was like I was back in my childhood-for once the Technicolor hues were back with full original mono in lossless PCM. Been hooked ever since.
As of now, I've got about 30 or so discs from various sources. My player is a Pioneer CLD-D702 (Auto-flip hardly works, CDs won't eject, digital audio gets scratchy or distorted on some discs, and no remote for switchable audio) that has several errors but keeps running like a tank. I've got this hooked into a decent old Sanyo CRT that unfortunately has the dreaded old slightly rounded edges. I then run coaxial and analog to my pieced together surround setup (Sony STR-DE675, Klipsch kg.5s, KV-1 center, SWV sub). Mono sounds unbelievable on my front mains!
Now once I actually find a good job, I can expand my collection. Heck my wishlist is almost 400 titles now. I don't have a problem...
Glad to be on here and look forward to having many, many discussions about the most fantastic outdated video format around.
Who says flipping discs is an issue? I tell 'em it's just like changing reels!
