Maybe I should add a "Sourced from theatrical prints (cue marks on screen)" to the extra details of all movies on LDs?

It will be great!!!

Maybe we could be a little more comprehensive and add a "Source material" instead with a combo box?

I'm not a movie transfer expert but what could be the possible options? (list below if a best guess, probably a few mistakes)

  • D1 Tape
  • D2 Tape
  • Interpositive
  • Telecine
  • 8mm
  • Super 8
  • 16mm
  • 16mm (theatrical prints)
  • 35mm
  • 35mm (theatrical prints)
  • 65mm
  • 65mm (theatrical prints)
  • 70mm
  • 70mm (theatrical prints)

In reality, it's never ever going to be directly from a theatrical print or other kind of film. The transfer will always be to a video tape master and the LaserDisc will be mastered from that. In the early days of DiscoVision, the transfers were done directly by DV, (but still transferred to tape) and that changed after the studios started making their own master tapes. Anything after the fail of Discovision in 81 would have been provided to Pioneer (or other manufacturer) as a D1 or D2 (or other format) tape. Often with the time code and chapter marks already embedded.

In theory, Pioneer used to provide check-discs back to the studios for QC verification. How audio sync issues and other mastering faults made it to the final master is a mystery, although I suspect Image sent the tapes to be pressed and didn't bother with check-discs.

Just watched How to Murder Your Wife, I noticed that the picture was shifted slightly to the left which put the que marks off screen, only once being partially shown.

There are many transfers on LD (& other formats) like that.

Also many LDs that quote "presented in the original aspect ratio" or similar wording are often way off the original ratio - surprisingly quite a number of the ROAN LDs carry the "original ratio" quote but are way off & I really would have expected them to have taken more care with details like that.

Not exactly true since D1 didn't come along until 1986 and D2 in 1988.

Prior to that it was all analog tape formats:
U-Matic (1971)
1" C (1976)
Betacam (1982)
BetaSP (1986)

LDs are only "Digitally Mastered" after 1986 when D1 was released by Sony. However, since that was a component format it probably didn't happen until after 1988 when Sony released D2 which is composite.

What is the first/earliest title with "Digitally Mastered" as a selling point?

The OP (and most subsequent posts) are referring to the type of original film source material and not whatever video tape intermediary?

I'm sure around 99.999% of the time for OAR releases we could (or not as the case) spot print cue marks to determine this, less so P&S and any other alternate AR releases made from prints.

Otherwise many of the proposed categories get so specific it would seem impossible to be anyway accurate on currently existing information, so that attempting to include it would only potentially diminish the accuracy and thus standing of the database in a major way.

I agree totally. Junk data is infinitely worse than no data.

I'm still trying to think of a satisfying way to state the aspect ratio info for Super 35 titles, since "pan & scan" and "open matte" don't necessarily apply.

Since we already have two different fields for this, why not just put "Super 35" under "Picture"? The actual aspect ratio is already stated below it under "Ratio" anyway.
